The Conjuring 2 spin-off The Nun has now arrived in theaters and James Wan is not wasting any time. Not only is a third  Annabelle film on its way along with The Conjuring 3, but the plan for The Conjuring 2‘s next spin-off is also already in the works, The Crooked Man.

We’ve reported on The Crooked Man‘s status several times in the past, but not much news has come our way lately, however, today we have an update to share with you. In several recent interviews, James Wan has stated that his goal with each spin-off is a very different tone from the other parts of the universe.

We think we have a really exciting story. What we want to do, with The Conjuring universe, is we want each of our little offshoots to have a very different flavor, right?
So, for example, Annabelle is the classic sort-of haunted doll subgenre. And with The Crooked Man, I would love to push it more down somewhat of that dark fairytale, and more whimsical, subgenre.
I love the idea that, within the Conjuring universe, each of our little movies all have their own flavor, so that way they don’t feel like they’re the same films.”
Wan told Entertainment Weekly.

So where does The Crooked Man stand? Wan told Cinema Blend:

We’re still working on the script for it. The bar is set very high for the movies that we want to make in The Conjuring Universe, and until we get to that place we’re not interested in putting one of these out there into the universe. I still think The Crooked Man could be a very interesting and different story.

One of the reasons we were excited to make The Nun is it looks and feels very different than the other films in the Conjuring Universe, in the sense that we take it out of the ordinary, Northeast United States, the look and feel of a regular home, and we transplanted to Romania in the 1950s, an abbey, all of that. We’re always looking to make sure that we don’t repeat ourselves.

The Crooked Man has a very different look and feel, or will have a very different look and feel, than the other films in the universe.”

We do not have a release date yet but assume it will follow the pattern and open in theaters in late 2020 or in 2021. Up to this point, the franchise has released a new film every year, but we already know there are two films in line ahead of The Crooked Man, Annabelle 3, and The Conjuring 3. We’ll keep you posted.
In the Conjuring 2, the family is witness to a frightening, thin, tall entity that hails from a classic nursery rhyme.

We learned some serious behind-the-scenes details of how the Crooked Man was brought to life and how the scene in the video above was made during our interview with Rampage actor Jason Liles who briefly appears as the Crooked Man. Be sure to check our interview with Liles for all the details.
