Netflix’s Bird Box (review) was an instant hit following its premiere last December with 80 million views in the first month. It didn’t take long for viewers to start asking for a sequel. Ask and ye shall receive.

Josh Malerman, author of the 2014 novel Bird Box is based on has just announced that he is currently writing the sequel. Titled Malorie, the next installment picks up eight years after the original and catches up with the lead character played by Sandra Bullock and her children Boy and Girl. We will also learn more about the mysterious creatures that cause death and chaos.

At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said, ‘I want to know what happens next!’ and she was like, ‘Well, you know, you could make that happen,’ so it really was this warm feeling,” Malerman told Esquire. “As much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story, and I wanted to get to know her even better,”

So, what can we expect? Does it pick up where the show left off?

Yeah, sort of. They’ve left there. Similar in that they’re trying to make things work. It’s not like it opens with them in paradise.” Malerman continued.

The author also revealed that Malorie has moved on from the sanctuary she found at the end of Bird Box. He also said that fans will get to know Malorie and the creatures better.

In Bird Box, Sandra Bullock stars as Malorie, a mother of two determined to protect her family at any cost. “American Horror Story” actress Sarah Paulson plays the role of Malorie’s sister Shannon. In the film, most of the world’s population is being killed by an entity that presents itself as your worst fear just before killing you.

John Malkovich, Rosa SalazarTrevante Rhodes, and Machine Gun Kelly co-star. The soundtrack includes tracks by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails.

Before you get too excited, there has been no word from Netflix about making a sequel. But the second that we hear something we’ll let you know. The good news is that the book will arrive on shelves on October 1st.
