Last summer Jason Statham went head to head with a Megladon in Meg (review). Not long after Meg opened in theaters it was announced that a sequel was in the works.

During a recent press junket for the upcoming reboot of Pet Sematary Cinemablend asked producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura for details about where the sequel stands. Bonaventura stated that what’s important is that the sequel, simply titled The Meg 2, have a good script which is currently being written.

We’re working on a script. Yeah. So you never know until you get a good script…I was very thankful that the audience got that we were just trying to have fun, [and] not take ourselves seriously at all.

Back in October at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit in L.A.  executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying made the following statement:

[A sequel is] definitely the plan. It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time.”

The secret’s out, not that ever was really in. We may not know when The Meg 2 might arrive, but at least we know that it’s out there. That’s not all, Statham has already gone on the record saying that he would be more than happy to reprise his role. Hopefully, several of the surviving characters will also return.

The Meg followed “A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.

Jason Statham starred alongside  Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black), Bingbing Li (Resident Evil: Retribution), Cliff Curtis (Fear the Walking Dead), Page Kennedy, and Rainn Wilson (The Office). Winston Chao (Skiptrace), Jessica McNamee (The Vow), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The BFG), Robert Taylor (Longmire), Sophia Shuya Cai (Somewhere Only We Know), and Masi Oka (TV’s Hawaii Five-0) co-starred.
