There is no way I can stay calm and professional about this game… Rebellion just took the whole Nazi-Zombie killing genre of gaming to a whole new level of blood splattering Nazi-killing goodness in their latest game Zombie Army 4: Dead War, the latest in their “Zombie Army” franchise.
To put it bluntly, this game is what happens when Sniper Elite (another game by Rebellion), Left 4 Dead, and Call of Duty Zombies all had a wild night together in a closet at an awesome party which resulted in the birth of this game!
This game continues the story of the previous games; I’ll admit I never played them but the introduction at the start of the game breaks it down perfectly so you don’t feel like to miss anything. You’re part of a global resistance movement that’s fighting back against the hoard of undead Nazis that were unleashed by Hitler as he was losing the war, at the time of this story, the war against the dead continues.
From the beginning you can pick whichever character you want, each has their strengths and weaknesses but all are more than capable to kick some undead Nazi ass. You are also able to pick whatever weapons you want to bring with you and can customize them on your way through the story.
If you’re familiar with how the Sniper Elite games work, you’re pretty much ready for this game. The controls are easy to learn and the tutorial is very helpful to first-time players. While in the Sniper Elite games you use your rifles a lot, in Zombie Army 4: Dead War you’ll be pretty much using any and all the weapons you’re bringing with you!
The sound and music fit the game’s theme perfectly and the voice acting is pretty good too. The overall feel of the game is that it’s an arcade experience as you see your score in the corner and the points you rack up at shown as you start blasting away, the more zombies you kill in a short amount of time, the higher your score will be thanks to the combo counter!
There are many ways to kill zombies in this game using the environment, my favorite so far is the plane propeller trap, it’s a plane propeller that when shot will turn on and pull zombies into its blade and turn them into goo! That’s another fun part of this game, the gore!
Like in the sniper games, at times you will activate a cinematic showing the bullet flying through the air and an X-ray mechanic kicks in showing you the damage the bullet has caused but unlike the other sniper games, this one is a bit more graphic and shows zombie heads blowing up in slo-mo!
There’s nothing else I can say about this game except that it’s a lot of fun, I mean literally it’s probably the most fun I’ve had playing a game like this in a while. The mix horror humor and references to horror shows/films make exploration fun, the story is entertaining but the gameplay itself is more enjoyable!
The game is fun solo but you can also play it with friends in a co-op mode, so the fun I’m sure will increase as you and your squad share in the putrid brain blasting gore-fest that is Zombie Army 4: Dead War!
Because of the easy to learn controls, customization of weapons and characters, the unlocking of abilities through arcade-style gameplay, and being infectiously entertaining, Zombie Army 4: Dead War gets 5 stars out of 5!
