Netflix has been killing it lately when it comes to horror with movies. They also have a new series that just came out titled “Brand New Cherry Flavor”, that’s the one we are here to talk about.

“Brand New Cherry Flavor” follows Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar), a filmmaker who has traveled to California for a meeting to meet a producer (Lou) in hopes of getting her short film adapted for a feature film. After meeting Lou (Eric Lange) she is double-crossed when he basically steals her film. Not long after she meets a mysterious woman, a witch (Catherine Keener), who tells her she can get Lisa revenge. This is where the series goes completely goes off the rails as Lisa begins to cough up kittens (yes, kittens), encounters zombies, and more, as Lisa fights to survive the hitmen Lou has hired to kill her. And that’s just the beginning of the insanity that is “Brand New Cherry Flavor.”

I don’t what I was expecting when I hit play, but I wasn’t expecting what I got, and I’m thrilled about that. This series has something every genre fan will love, gore, action, violence, magic, and more. The story is fresh and it is definitely unique. The writing is fantastic and the show has an amazing, dark, and gritty atmosphere.

The casting for “Brand New Cherry Flavor” is perfect. Rosa Salazar, who previously starred in Bird Box, nailed it. She has nice character development and makes the strange events in the series feel genuine. I love that Lisa was written as a tough, determined woman and not the weak, often pathetic female characters we get in the genre. Speaking of tough, Oscar-nominated actress Catherine Keener kills it as the witch Boro. When her true intentions and identity are revealed, you can’t help but still kind of like her even though she is a villain. When it comes to characters you can like, Lou isn’t one of them. He’s a petty douche. And it’s nearly impossible to feel any sympathy for him. That being said, Eric Lange did a great job of giving us a character to hate.

If you’re into violence and gore, “Brand New Cherry Flavor” has definitely got it, in fact, it’s filled with it. And it’s often extremely brutal and bloody.

All kinds of crazy stuff happens in the series and I have to say the special effects team did an incredible job of creating this magical environment right in the middle of the city. There are some effects that will straight have you cringing and asking ‘What the fuck did I just see?” but in a good way. Speaking of crazy effects, brace yourself for the first sex scene it’s wild and it may leave you slightly scarred for life, but whatever you do, don’t give up on the show. It’s totally worth it. Good horror is meant to make you feel something, even if it’s disgust or shock.

If you’re into stuff that’s a little different and are desperate to watch something like you’ve never seen before, “Brand New Cherry Flavor” is it. It’s streaming now on Netflix and I highly recommend it.
