The third volume of our series, ‘Criminally Underrated Horror Movies You Need To Watch,’ provides more great films you may have missed. Be sure to check out Part I and Part II of our list. Keep an eye out for more lists to come.
The Exorcist III (1990)
The Exorcist III is the only film (in my opinion) that comes close to the quality of the original movie. Featuring a fantastic cast that gave powerhouse performances, The Exorcist III is simply brilliant.
In the film, “A police lieutenant uncovers more than he bargained for as his investigation of a series of murders, which have all the hallmarks of the deceased Gemini serial killer, leads him to question the patients of a psychiatric ward.”
Skeleton Key (2005)
This horror-filled film stars Kate Hudson as a hospice nurse working at a spooky New Orleans plantation home who finds herself entangled in a mystery involving the house’s dark past.
Where to watch: Starz, Direct TV, Prime Video, FlixFling, AMC, rent
Last Shift / Malum (2014/2023)
You get double the horror with Last Shift and its new reimagining Maulm, which expands on the original’s story. Be sure to check out our interview with both films’ director Anthony DiBlasi’ and actress Natalie Victoria, about the recently released Malum.
In Last Shift, “A rookie cop’s 1st shift alone on the last night of a closing police station turns into a living nightmare.”
Where to watch: Last Shift: Prime Video, Peacock, VUDU, Tubi

Dead Silence
What’s creepier than dolls? Puppets. This James Wan-directed film centers on “A young widower who returns to his hometown to search for answers to his wife’s murder, which may be linked to the ghost of a deceased ventriloquist.”
Where to watch: YouTube, Prime Video, VUDU
The Ruins
In the film, directed by Carter Smith, “a Mexican holiday takes a turn for the worse when a group of friends and a fellow tourist embark on a remote archaeological dig in the jungle, where something evil lives among the ruins.”
Where to watch: Amazon Prime, VUDU
Gothica
This 2003 movie may be the most overlooked and best film on this list. It features an all-star cast that includes Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz, Robert Downey Jr, Charles Dutton, and John Caroll Lynch. It delves into mental illness, murder, sexual assault, and the paranormal. It’s an action-packed movie with twists you won’t see coming.
In Gothica, “A depressed psychiatrist wakes up as a patient in the asylum where she worked, with no memory of why she is there or what she has done.”
Where to watch: Amazon Prime
