The classic saga of Beowulf and Grendel is getting a fresh perspective in a new live-action film titled Grendel. It is an adaptation of John Gardner’s acclaimed 1971 novel. The film will offer a unique twist on the Beowulf story by telling it from Grendel’s point of view.

Directed by Robert D. Krzykowski, the film boasts a star-studded cast that includes Jeff Bridges as Grendel, the monstrous outsider,  and Dave Bautista as the legendary warrior Beowulf. Bryan Cranston, Thomasin McKenzie, Aidan Turner, and T Bone Burnett round out the cast. Burnett will also contribute original music to the soundtrack.

This retelling of Grendel promises to explore the humanity within the beast as Grendel narrates his tale. Adding to high expectations is the involvement of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, renowned for its practical creature effects. They will design and create the creatures and monsters to bring this world to life.

“Grendel represents everything I love about movies,” said director Krzykowski. “John Gardner’s brilliant novel cleverly explores what it means to be human, but through the eyes of a monster. I’m thrilled to be working with such a talented team to bring this unexpected and wonderful story to audiences.”

Beowulf is an Old English epic poem believed to have been written in the seventh century. Featuring 3,182 lines, the poem tells of Beowulf, a warrior/hero who arrives in Denmark to assist King Hrothgar. Hrothgar’s kingdom is under attack and seized by terror, plagued by the monstrous Grendel.

This isn’t the first film based on the battle of Beowulf and Grendel; in 2007, a movie titled Beowulf, which was an adult animated picture, was released starring Angelina Jolie. You can find it streaming now on Paramount+ and Showtime.

We will keep you posted as more information becomes available. In the meantime, you can find the translated poem here.
