True Detective” fans rejoice! Season 5 is officially in the works, and creator Issa López is pulling out all the stops for a new adventure.

In a recent interview, López revealed she’s deep into the writing process for the next season. She emphasizes a complete departure from previous seasons, promising “different characters, different setting, different story.” This news suggests an exciting standalone story, much like the show’s earlier format.

López, who co-wrote and directed Season 4’s “True Detective: Night Country,” clearly relishes the creative freedom. Variety quotes her as saying, “It’s a blast. I’m enjoying it like crazy.” “Night Country,” despite facing criticism from the original series creator, Nic Pizzolatto, garnered critical acclaim with a 92% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a rave review from us, calling it “chilling.”

For those unfamiliar with the most recent season, “Night Country” unfolded in the chilling Alaskan town of Ennis. Detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) investigated the disappearance of eight men working at a remote Arctic research station. The season delved into themes of darkness, both internal and external, as the detectives grappled with the harsh Alaskan environment and the secrets buried beneath the ice. Check out our Q&A with López, Foster, and Reis.

While details about Season 5 remain under wraps, one thing is clear: a fresh start awaits “True Detective.” With a talented writer like López at the wheel, this new season promises to be a thrilling addition to the series’ legacy. While you wait, watch season four of “True Detective: Night Country” on MAX or get your copy on Blu-ray. Here’s a look back at the trailer.
