Production is underway in the Big Easy on Goons, a new horror film from The First Purge filmmaker Gerard McMurray. The film is set against the eerie backdrop of Louisiana’s cane fields and plantations, which are haunting in their own right.
The film features an ensemble cast of well-known actors and musicians. The cast of Goons includes the rapper YG, J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley), Serayah McNeill (Empire), SteVonté Hart (Bel-Air), and Tyler Lepley (Harlem). Chloe Bailey (The Exorcism, “Swarm”) and Michael Rainey Jr. (Power) round out the cast.
Goons is the first to be produced under Confluential Films’ newly launched horror genre label, New Fear Unlocked Productions. McMurray co-wrote the movie with Hodge K. Johnson, and Tommy Oliver will serve as producer.
Director Gerard McMurray expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “YG, J. Alphonse, Serayah, SteVonté and Tyler all bring their own unique flavor to this amazing recipe we are cooking up on Goons here in my hometown of New Orleans. I can’t wait for the world to see what we are putting together with this young, gifted cast.”
McMurray, who co-wrote the script with Hodge K. Johnson, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: “I’m beyond excited to direct a film in the horror genre. Goons is a love letter to my hometown of New Orleans and a deeply personal story for me. Producing this film with Confluential/New Fear Unlocked showcases the power of Black storytellers working together.”
While plot details remain scarce, the film’s title and setting hint at a potentially chilling story. With McMurray’s prior experience with films like The First Purge, Burning Sands, and episodes of Jordan Peele’s “Twilight Zone” revival, Goons has serious potential to be another fright-filled experience for genre fans. As production continues, anticipation grows for this new horror offering. We’ll keep you posted as more details emerge. In the meantime, head over to FoxNow, AppleTV, Prime Video, or Fubo and stream The First Purge.
