Focus Features is set to release Last Breath this February. The thrilling and heart-pounding film is based on the true story of a deep-sea diving disaster. The film is from director Alex Parkinson, who previously helmed the acclaimed documentary of the same name.  It stars Woody Harrelson as a seasoned diver fighting against the relentless force of the ocean. It will leave you breathless.

Last Breath follows a group of deep-sea divers who find themselves in a dangerous situation when one of their team members, Chris Lemons (played by Finn Cole), becomes trapped hundreds of feet below the surface. As they battle the raging elements and the relentless pressure of the deep, the divers must push themselves to their limits to save their comrade’s life.

The genre of underwater thrillers has a history of mixed results. While films like The Abyss and Sanctum have achieved critical acclaim and commercial success, others like Underwater have struggled to resonate with audiences.

One of the biggest challenges for filmmakers in this genre is balancing realism with spectacle. Capturing the intense and dangerous world of deep-sea diving requires significant resources and technical expertise. However, audiences often prefer films that lean towards horror or fantasy, which can be easier to execute.

Despite these challenges, Last Breath promises a thrilling and immersive cinematic experience. Parkinson’s documentary provided a gripping firsthand account of the disaster, and his transition to narrative filmmaking is highly anticipated. Watch the documentary on Netflix before you head to theaters to see the film.

“This film will touch on a lot of ideas; the strength of the human spirit, and the ability to hang on as well, this poor chap who is at the bottom of the sea bed, trying to cling on for as long as possible. It turns into this amazing race against time, which will play out in real time in the film.” Parkinson has stated.

With a talented cast and crew, Last Breath is poised to be one of the most exciting films of 2025. Witness this true story of terror and triumph when it opens in theaters on February 28.
