If you thought the job market was scary, Sydney Sweeney is about to show you what a really bad day looks like. Hot off the success of The Housemaid, Sweeney is trading domestic drama for supernatural dread. She’s starring in The Caretaker, a new horror coming to us from Universal.
Based on the upcoming novel by Marcus Kliewer (hitting shelves this April 21 via 12:01 Books), the project has officially tapped David Bruckner to write and direct. Given that Bruckner is the mastermind behind the nightmare-fueled The Ritual and the Hellraiser reimagining, we can safely assume this won’t be a “relaxing weekend at the beach” movie.
The Job Description from Hell
The story follows Macy Mullins (Sweeney), a young woman who spots an urgent job posting that sounds like a dream: competitive pay for a mere three days of work. No experience necessary? Great. Stunning Oregon Coast property? Sign us up.
The Catch? What begins as a peculiar side gig quickly devolves into a waking nightmare. There is something “incomprehensible” and deeply unfriendly dwelling on that property. By the time Macy realizes her “other duties as assigned” include standing between an eldritch evil and the total collapse of humanity, it’s probably too late to check the Glassdoor reviews.
A Powerhouse Production
Sweeney isn’t just starring; she’s producing under her Fifty-Fifty Films banner. A heavy-hitting team of genre veterans joins her. Michael Bay and Brad Fuller are producing via Platinum Dunes (through their first-look deal with Paramount). Scott Glassgold: Producing for 12:01 Films.
If you’ve ever taken a temp job that felt like a descent into madness, Macy Mullins is your new patron saint. Just remember: if the pay seems too good to be true, it’s probably because you’re the sacrifice. Are you ready to see Sydney go head-to-head with the supernatural, or are you still recovering from her last thriller?
