Summer camp is rarely a peaceful getaway in the world of thrillers, and Netflix’s upcoming prestige mystery is no exception. Ella Rubin (Until Dawn, Fear Street: Prom Queen) has officially signed on to join the sprawling, multi-generational adaptation of Liz Moore’s bestselling 2024 novel, The God of the Woods.
Rubin joins a high-caliber ensemble that already includes Maya Hawke (Stranger Things) and Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin).
Wealth, Secrets, and a Missing Child
Set against the deceptively scenic backdrop of the Adirondacks, the series tracks the slow-motion implosion of the ultra-wealthy Van Laar family. When 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar vanishes from her family’s summer camp, it forces a collision between the town’s distinct social classes and unearths an older family tragedy that everyone would prefer stayed buried.
As the investigation deepens, the Van Laars’ immense wealth and influence begin to unravel, exposing the toxic side effects of extreme privilege and institutional power.
The Suspects and Citizens
The casting lineup splits the drama between the frantic family, the working-class locals, and the law. Ella Rubin, Kerry Condon, and Maya Hawke have also joined the fray.
A Powerhouse Creative Team
Netflix and Sony Pictures Television are sparing no expense behind the scenes to ensure this adaptation hits hard. Author Liz Moore is pulling double duty, serving as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside Liz Hannah (The Post, Mindhunter).
If that psychological pedigree wasn’t enough, the series is being executive-produced by Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty for Original Film—the production powerhouse behind chaotic hits like “The Boys” and the slasher revival “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Stay tuned for more details.
