The Duffer Brothers are officially trading the teenage angst of Hawkins, Indiana, for a New Mexico retirement village. But don’t expect this community to be all about shuffleboard and afternoon naps. In Netflix’s new sci-fi thriller “The Boroughs,” the golden years are about to get incredibly dark.

Paradise with a Pulse (Barely)

The series introduces us to Sam Cooper, a fresh arrival who views his new sun-drenched community less as a retirement haven and more as a minimum-security prison. Things go from mundane to terrifying when Sam becomes convinced that a bloodthirsty monster is stalking the cul-de-sacs after dark.

Naturally, the local authorities chalk his fears up to a classic case of a confused older man yelling at clouds. But Sam isn’t backing down. Realizing he’s on his own, he rallies a band of neighborhood misfits to hunt the truth—and the creature.

The Ultimate A-Team (With AARP Memberships)

Forget the kids on bikes; it’s time for the seniors in golf carts. Sam’s ragtag militia is a masterclass in eclectic backgrounds. Because society consistently overlooks and underestimates older people, this crew has the perfect camouflage. And that makes them incredibly dangerous.

The casting directors absolutely understood the assignment, assembling a legendary roster of heavy hitters to protect the desert cul-de-sacs. Alfred Molina and Geena Davis star alongside Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, Bill Pullman, Jena Malone andJane Kaczmarek.

High Stakes, Short Fuses

Behind the camera, showrunners Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance) are using the genre framework to ask some heavy existential questions.

“What will you do with the time you have left?” Addiss poses.

For these heroes, the clock is ticking a little faster than usual. Between the scorching desert sun, existential dread, and the literal nighttime terrors, aging has never looked so intense. Forget bingo night; these seniors are saving the world before the early bird special ends.

“The Boroughs” is officially unleashing geriatric justice on Netflix. Grab your reading glasses and prepare for a binge because the series is streaming now.
