They say there is nothing quite like a mother’s love, but Shudder’s upcoming supernatural thriller is about to put that theory to a deeply disturbing test. The haunting psychological folk-horror sMOTHERed is officially coming to the streaming platform.
A Fractured Mind and a Fatal Folklore
The film follows Alif, a renowned micro-painter whose life is completely upended after surviving a catastrophic accident. He returns home with his mind in pieces, plagued by fractured memories and a warped sense of reality.
Things take a bizarre and sinister turn when a mysterious elderly woman arrives on his doorstep. She boldly claims to be the mother he doesn’t remember. As Alif desperately searches for the truth about his identity, he inadvertently uncovers a terrifying, blood-soaked legacy. The classic Indonesian legend of Malin Kundang heavily inspires the nightmare. It’s a cautionary tale about a rebellious son cursed by his mother to turn to stone.
The Creative Mind Meld
Behind the camera, the film boasts a powerhouse creative lineup steeped in high-concept genre cinema. Kevin Rahardjo and Rafki Hidayat direct it. It features a script penned by Rafki Hidayat, Aline Djayasukmana, and Indonesia’s reigning master of horror, Joko Anwar (Impetigore, Satan’s Slaves).
The Congregation: Cast List
The ensemble cast brings together some of the region’s most compelling dramatic and genre talent to bring the family secrets to life: the film stars Rio Dewanto, Faradina Mufti, Vonny Anggraini, and Sugar Mill. The cast is rounded out by Jordan Omar, Sulthan Hamonangan, Gambit Saifullah, Nova Eliza, and Tony Merle.
