Just when you thought the world of “The Last of Us“ couldn’t get any more bleak or intensely stressful. Now, HBO is throwing Peter Sarsgaard into the apocalypse.
According to Deadline, The Bride! actor is the latest heavy hitter to join the cast for Season 3. Sarsgaard will be playing a brand-new, original character. One that is completely absent from the Naughty Dog video games: Amon, a leader of the fiercely fanatical Seraphites (aka “The Scars”).
Halftime in Vancouver
Cameras have temporarily stopped rolling. Production is currently on a month-long intermission because the FIFA World Cup has taken over Vancouver, one of this year’s host cities. Once the soccer fans clear out and filming resumes, production will grind through the rest of 2026 to prepare for a planned 2027 premiere.
Shifting Perspectives: What to Expect
Season 2 jumps five years into the future to follow the fallout of Joel and Ellie’s original cross-country road trip. Season 3 is set to flip the script entirely. Plot details are locked in an HBO vault, but we do know the narrative will pivot sharply to Abby’s perspective. It will also lean heavily into the brutal tribal warfare of the Seraphites.
The lineup for this final stretch is massive. Kaitlyn Dever steps into the spotlight as Abby, alongside Bella Ramsey, returning as a battle-hardened Ellie. Isabela Merced, Gabriel Luna, and Jeffrey Wright will co-star. Season 2 guest stars Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord have officially been bumped up to series regulars.
Sarsgaard joins other newcomers such as Patrick Wilson (The Conjuring), Jason Ritter (Freddy vs. Jason), Clea DuVall (The Faculty), Li Jun Li (Sinners), and Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Bumblebee).
The Final Chapter
However, all good (and devastating) things must come to an end: this third season is widely expected to serve as the final chapter of the post-apocalyptic drama.
Behind the scenes, things will look a little different for the grand finale. Game co-creator Neil Druckmann stepped down as co-showrunner last year, leaving Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) to fly solo as the lone showrunner to guide humanity’s worst nightmare to its televised conclusion.
Here’s a look back at the season 2 trailer. As soon as the new trailer debuts, we’ll let you know.
