Who needs the Marvel Cinematic Universe anyway? While Disney continues to leave him spinning his wheels in development hell for the long-delayed Blade reboot, two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali has decided to take matters—and a giant, razor-sharp edge—into his own hands.
Amazon MGM Studios has just unleashed the first official teaser trailer for Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, a relentless new action thriller slated for a wide theatrical release this October.
Written and directed by Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli), the film casts Ali as a devoutly religious hitman. He is forced to slash his way across Houston. He’s on a mission to protect his children following the death of his wife. Think profound existential crisis, heavy family drama, and an absolute metric ton of carnage.
Slicing Through the Red Tape
The teaser trailer keeps its narrative cards close to its chest. However, it does prove that Ali is fully locked into his career-action-hero era. After years of prestige dramas and Academy Award wins, he is trading heavy monologues for heavy artillery, cementing his status as a one-person army.
The behind-the-scenes drama makes this project even sweeter. Marvel Studios actually hired director Bassam Tariq back in 2021 to direct Ali in Blade. Tariq ultimately walked away from the vampire hunter in 2022 after the production suffered endless corporate delays. Clearly, neither the director nor his star felt like waiting around. With Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother, the duo finally got to make their brutal, blade-centric action flick. It just happens to feature a lot less spandex and a lot more gritty, real-world grit.
A Rogue’s Gallery of Heavy Hitters
The teaser keeps the spotlight trained on Ali’s lethal patriarch. However, the film boasts a stacked supporting cast, ensuring this won’t be a solo act. The ensemble includes Giancarlo Esposito (The Boys, Breaking Bad), John Cho (Star Trek), Tramell Tillman (Severance), and Tiffany Boone (The Hunters). Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Adia, and Jahleel Kamara round out the cast.
Amazon MGM is keeping character details firmly under wraps for now. Still, when you throw notorious screen legends like Giancarlo Esposito and John Cho into a hitman movie, it’s safe to assume someone is playing a magnificently sinister villain.
If Marvel won’t give the people what they want, Amazon will. Prepare to watch Mahershala Ali finally let loose when Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother hacks its way into theaters this October.
