The Twisted Childhood Universe is back, and this time, it’s got a cricket from your actual nightmares. Pinocchio: Unstrung is officially headed to UK theaters this July courtesy of Altitude, and the new clip released today shows a side of Geppetto that may completely change how you look at the classic fable.
He’s a Bad (Wooden) Boy
The film just celebrated its UK Premiere at the Raindance Film Festival, where it locked down four major nominations. The story tracks Geppetto (Richard Brake) as he gifts a wooden doll to his grandson. Oblivious to the most basic rules of horror cinema, the kid introduces his new buddy to the real world. However, this triggers a horrific domino effect. Pinocchio decides that the best way to be a “good boy” is to eliminate anyone he deems “bad” violently.
Horror Royalty
To ensure maximum insomnia, the filmmakers brought in horror royalty Robert Englund to voice a demonic Jiminy Cricket. Having Freddy Krueger guide a killer puppet’s moral compass is a stroke of twisted genius, and the resulting chaos is a masterclass in practical gore and pitch-black humor.
Steered by writer-director Rhys Frake-Waterfield and producer Scott Chambers (interview), this movie is ready to ruin your weekend. Clear your schedule, lock your doors, and watch the brand-new clip below before Pinocchio: Unstrung splinters its way into theaters nationwide on July 24th.
