If you’re looking for a psychological techno-thriller to keep you frozen in your theater seat this summer, Focus Features has the perfect cybernetic nightmare lined up. The studio is officially set to unleash Hot Spot in theaters nationwide this August.

Directed by Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska (The Lure, The Silent Twins) and penned by Robert Bolesto, the film promises a hypnotic blend of near-future paranoia and classic noir detective fiction.

A Meltdown of Identity and Intelligence

The film is set in a claustrophobic, near-future society completely governed by a sentient, omnipotent Artificial Intelligence. The narrative follows a weary private investigator who takes on what seems like a routine murder case. However, the investigation quickly derails when he uncovers the tracks of a shadowy rebel faction. It’s an underground group that possesses the exact digital weaponry needed to permanently corrupt and undermine their synthetic digital overlord.

As the detective digs deeper into the corporate and technological abyss, the case turns inward. His own identity begins to violently unravel, plunging his reality into a state of trippy, hypnotic, and inescapable psychological meltdown.

A Powerhouse International Team

To bring this high-concept digital dystopia to life, the production has assembled a phenomenal, genre-tested international cast and crew:

The film stars Andrzej Konopka as the spiraling detective, headlining opposite international star Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Lamb) and Reika Kirishima (Drive My Car). Bogna Szewczyk-Skupień, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, and Gregory Jankilevitsch produce.

An impressive team of executive producers holds down the fort behind the scenes, including Beata Rzeźniczek, Marcin Czernik, Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Małgorzata Seck, Łukasz Poniński, Marcin Łuczaj, and Jan Naszewski.

Coming This Summer

With Smoczyńska’s track record for delivering stunning, unconventional cinema, Hot Spot looks to be a beautifully surreal, cerebral antidote to the standard summer blockbuster formula. Mark your calendars for August 21—and maybe double-check your privacy settings before heading to the theater.
