If your cinematic radar hasn’t already been buzzing over Sony Pictures’ upcoming high-concept horror film Skeletons, it’s time to recalibrate. The project was already a massive blip on the genre map. However, the star-studded momentum just hit hyperdrive with the massive news that industry legend John Goodman has officially signed on to star. But Goodman is no stranger to the genre. He appeared in films like 10 Cloverfield Lane, the series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” and so much more.
Goodman joins an absolute powerhouse lineup that includes Academy Award winner Brie Larson and indie genre darling Kyle Gallner—who is thrillingly reuniting with director JT Mollner following his spectacular, unhinged collaboration on the non-linear thriller Strange Darling. Oh, and a guy named J.J. Abrams is producing. That’s one hell of a team.
A Terrifyingly Twisted Family Secret
Do not walk into the theater expecting a routine, bargain-bin jump-scare fest. Skeletons is being described as a grounded, modern, and high-concept spin on the classic creature feature.
The story unfolds entirely from the fragile perspective of a young boy who leads a seemingly normal life with his beloved parents. However, the domestic bliss begins to rot when he slowly uncovers a deeply disturbing, reality-shattering secret about his mother’s true nature. Spoiler alert: Mom is hiding something genuinely monstrous beneath her skin.
The Unbelievable Creative Pedigree Behind the Curtain
If the onscreen casting didn’t already make you weak in the knees, the creative force pulling the strings behind the lens ensures this project is a certified heavy hitter.
The screenplay was penned by master of suspense Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You, Love and Monsters), who brilliantly adapted the script from a gripping, claustrophobic short story by acclaimed horror author Philip Fracassi. Sony Pictures clearly smelled a massive theatrical hit early on, aggressively outbidding the competition to snag the worldwide rights for a cool $25 million during the European Film Market.
The nightmare comes courtesy of a joint alliance between FilmNation Entertainment’s Infrared label (which is fully financing the film), J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, and Assemble Media. Holding down the fort on the producing roster are Drew Simon, J.J. Abrams, Jon Cohen, and Jack Heller, with Larson, Duffield, and Fracassi all pulling double duty as executive producers.
The Ultimate Genre Dream Team
For horror fans, seeing Gallner back in the fold with Mollner is worth the price of admission alone. Gallner has been completely dominating the modern horror renaissance with stellar, must-watch performances in Smile, Smile 2, The Passenger, and Dinner in America. Adding John Goodman’s unmatched gravitas to that mix? That’s just showing off.
