It looks like director Paul Feig is trading in his signature sharp suits and maids for a one-way ticket to the dark side.
Hot on the heels of directing the global smash-hit thriller The Housemaid last Christmas—and with its highly anticipated sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, already on his plate—Feig is diving headfirst into pure terror. Deadline reports that he has officially signed on to direct Detention, a brand-new horror-thriller from genre titans Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, and Platinum Dunes.
Daniel Gold penned the spec screenplay, and while the exact plot details are currently locked away in a high-security locker, insiders say the project is exactly the kind of sinister material Feig was hunting for. After dipping his toes into the thriller pool with The Housemaid, the director reportedly wanted to try his hand at something significantly darker.
A Heavyweight Horror Coalition
While the movie doesn’t have an official studio home just yet, industry insiders note that Universal Pictures will almost certainly get the first crack at it, thanks to their incredibly lucrative first-look relationships with both Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes.
The producing roster alone reads like a literal VIP lounge of Hollywood hitmakers and scream queens. Producers include Jason Blum, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, Cameron Fuller, Laura Fischer, and Paul Feig himself. Paranormal Activity’s Steven Schneider will executive produce.
As soon as more details surface, I will give you an update. In the meantime, Feig’s The Housemaid is available on Starz and Prime Video. His 2016 female-led Ghostbusters movie is out on Netflix and Prime Video.
