If you spent the late 2000s screaming into a headset in a Rust lobby, your cinematic moment has arrived. Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Call of Duty film has officially chosen its theater of war. It’s heading straight for the franchise’s most beloved timeline.
During a “Call of Duty in Culture” panel at NYC’s Fanatics Fest—originally meant to hype the upcoming October launch of Modern Warfare 4—director and co-writer Peter Berg (Lone Survivor) dropped a massive flashbang on the audience. He confirmed that the highly anticipated movie will be set entirely within the Modern Warfare universe.
The Sheridan & Berg Loadout
Plot details have been locked in a classified vault since the film was first announced in September 2025. What we do know is that the script is being penned by Taylor Sheridan, behind “Yellowstone” and “Sicario.” Pair Sheridan’s gritty realism with Peter Berg’s explosive directorial style, and the film is practically guaranteed to be 120 minutes of tactical reloads and jaw-clenching tension.
For context, the Modern Warfare sub-franchise originally saved COD from WWII fatigue in 2007. The games famously follow Captain John Price and the elite Task Force 141 as they play global whack-a-mole with notorious terrorist Vladimir Makarov. The upcoming Modern Warfare 4 game is taking the fight to a fictionalized conflict between North and South Korea, so expect the movie to pull from that same high-stakes playbook.
The 2028 Killstreak
Last month, Paramount slapped a June 30, 2028, release date on the calendar. They are working in lockstep with publisher Activision and its new parent company, Xbox.
But don’t expect them to stop at just one movie. When Skydance recently took the reins at Paramount, sources confirmed that Sheridan is currently focused on this single feature. However, the multiyear pact is designed to build out a massive, interconnected Call of Duty cinematic universe. One that will work across both film and television.
