Alex Goyette makes his feature directorial debut with Breeder, a darkly hilarious yet deeply unsettling horror-thriller that releases in U.S. theaters this Fall via IFC Films and Shudder. Following its celebrated premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June, the film turns a bizarre premise into a claustrophobic nightmare. It’s a movie about human pedigree, trapped spaces, and genetic obsession.

Poodles, Pedigrees, and Human Livestock

The story centers on Russell (Daniel Doheny). He’s a broke MIT dropout desperate for cash who accepts a seemingly straightforward research job at a secluded ranch. The facility is owned by Patti (Dot-Marie Jones). She’s an eccentric champion poodle breeder who has spent her life engineering flawless canine bloodlines. However, Russell soon discovers the position is a sinister front. Patti has decided to expand her eugenics project beyond dogs. She’s eyeing Russell and her own daughter (Maddie Phillips) as subjects for her next selective-breeding experiment.

Tribeca Buzz and Psychological Dread

Rather than relying on cheap jump scares or standard slasher tropes, Breeder aims to deliver terror from dread and the slow-burn realization of Russell’s predicament. Early reviews out of Tribeca praised Goyette’s script for balancing pitch-black comedy with genuine unease. While recalling the social nightmare of Get Out and the family dynamics of Ready or Not, the film treats human beings like prized livestock, leaving its protagonist cornered as the ranch’s terrifying reality takes hold.

An Indie Debut Built for Genre Fans

Goyette wrote, directed, and edited the independent feature himself. The film is anchored by a disturbing narrative and the commanding talent of Dot-Marie Jones alongside Tanaya Beatty. Recognizing its distinct hook and strong festival word-of-mouth, IFC Films and Shudder acquired the rights across global territories. Following its October 16 theatrical debut, Breeder will head to Shudder’s streaming service to shock audiences at home.
