Review

Director Julia Kowalski’s Her Will Be Done (Que ma volonté soit faite; France/Poland, 2026) is a scathing look at the dominance of males — most of them poorly behaved and some outright dangerous — in a rural French village, and the desire of two young women to break free from that society. At least one of them has occult powers that may make that possible.

Nawojka (Maria Wrobel) is a young woman whose Polish family  has  moved to a rural French village. Though she expresses her wish to go to veterinary school on a scholarship, her father Henryk (Wilciech Skibinski) wants her to stay home and take care of him and her rude brothers Tomek (Przemyslaw Przestrzelski) and Bogdan (Kubya Dyniewicz). Nawojka’s late mother was believed to have been a witch, and she and her family fear she may be headed the same way. Enter Sandra (Roxane Mesquida), an unpopular neighbor whom the villagers detest and who may have killed her ex-boyfriend. Nawojka finds the young woman fascinating, and when they begin to spend time together, horrifying events occur.

Kowalski has crafted a gripping folk horror that truly engages viewers in the fates of Nawojka and Sandra. Kowalski, who cowrote the screenplay with Simon Beaufils, builds the suspense wonderfully, delivering plenty of mystery and intriguing family drama as the film builds  toward a stunning third act.

Wrobel gives an amazing performance as a young woman who believes she has inherited a generational curse, and who can no longer live under the bonds that her family and the prejudiced neighbors hold. Mesquida is also terrific as the mysterious neighbor who only came back to the village to sell her family home, but whose mere presence has started a wave of hatred destined to lead to tragedy.

Her Will Be Done, from Yellow Veil Pictures, is available nationwide on VOD from October 2, 2026.
