Paramount is officially developing a live-action adaptation of CD Projekt Red’s hit sci-fi RPG Cyberpunk 2077, Variety confirmed. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for producing the Transformers franchise, is attached to lead the project alongside CD Projekt Red.

Sales Success and Dystopian Plot

Despite a rough December 2020 launch, Cyberpunk 2077 evolved into a massive commercial hit. It sold 40 million copies worldwide, and its expansion, Phantom Liberty, moved an additional 15 million units. The game takes place in Night City, a neon-drenched dystopian metropolis. Players follow V, a mercenary who accidentally installs a biochip containing the digital consciousness of rogue rockstar Johnny Silverhand, originally portrayed by Keanu Reeves. As a result, V and Johnny must team up to save V’s life while fighting the corrupt megacorporation Arasaka.

Will Reeves Return?

When fans hear the news, their main question will be: Is Keanu Reeves returning? When asked about reprising his role, Reeves recently told IGN, “Absolutely. I’d love to play Johnny Silverhand again.” So, it is very possible.

In the game, Keanu Reeves plays Johnny Silverhand, a legendary rockerboy, war veteran, and anti-corporate terrorist who died decades before the main events of Cyberpunk 2077. His digitized consciousness is stored on an experimental biochip that accidentally lodges in the protagonist V’s head. Throughout the game, Johnny serves as a constant companion in V’s brain, appearing as a projection that shifts between cynical advisor and reluctant ally as his mind slowly overwrites V’s existence.

A Talented Voice Cast

While Keanu Reeves brought star power to Johnny, he was far from the only notable talent to lend his voice to Cyberpunk 2077. Hollywood actor Idris Elba took center stage in the Phantom Liberty expansion as secret agent Solomon Reed, complete with his own motion-captured performance.

Musician Grimes joined the cast as the pop sensation Lizzy Wizzy, while game industry legends Gavin Drea and Cherami Leigh voiced the male and female versions of the protagonist, V. Additionally, veteran voice actors like Emily Woo Zeller (Panam Palmer), Carla Tassara (Judy Alvarez), Robbie Daymond (River Ward), and Jane Perry (Rogue Amendiares) brought the city’s diverse roster of mercenaries, allies, and fixers to life. No word yet on whether Reeves or the other voice cast members will reprise their roles.

Shifting Hollywood Trends and Mature Audience Strategy

Hollywood’s view on video game adaptations has shifted dramatically in recent years. While earlier gaming movies were often dismissed, recent box-office successes like Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Minecraft Movie proved the genre’s massive profitability. However, unlike those family-friendly hits, Paramount is deliberately targeting a mature audience with Cyberpunk 2077.

Paramount’s Broader Gaming Slate

This film also fits into Paramount’s broader gaming push. The studio is currently developing a Call of Duty film directed by Peter Berg and co-written by Taylor Sheridan. Additionally, Paramount is preparing to release a new Street Fighter movie on October 16.
