Fans of the Halloween franchise frequently debate the controversial third film. Historically, many viewers felt Halloween III: Season of the Witch didn’t belong in the series. However, director Jason Eisener took a completely different approach this horror season. He crafted a brilliant fan film that finally connects the film.
A Twisted Silver Shamrock Origin
His new short film is titled Project Shamrock: The Secret Origins of Michael Myers Exposed. This exciting project ties Halloween III into the broader Michael Myers storyline. The story presents Michael Myers as a sinister experiment from the Silver Shamrock Corporation. Specifically, young Michael wears a specialized Silver Shamrock mask. This cursed mask transforms the innocent child into a cold-blooded killer. As a result, the plot connects two distinct eras of horror lore into one cohesive universe.
Retro Aesthetic and Deep Mythology
The story unfolds through a lost film reel from Halloween 1960. This vintage reel also reveals disturbing evidence of top-secret human testing. Eisener captured the entire project on genuine 16mm and 8mm film stock. The timeline takes place years before the events of the original movies. In fact, the short seamlessly links Silver Shamrock, Michael Myers, and the Cult of Thorn together.
Crafting the Independent Short
Eisener wrote, directed, and edited this non-profit project. Additionally, the crew filmed the short over two days in Nova Scotia. Producers Jen Yamato, Ian Matheson, and Andy Appelle guided the independent production team. Meanwhile, Appelle managed the retro cinematography for the project. Katie McQueston supervised the production design, wardrobe, props, and special effects. Furthermore, Andrew Gordon Macpherson composed the eerie music and sound design. Finally, artist Steven Kostanski crafted a custom prosthetic head for a terrifying highlight moment.
The fan film isn’t the only project that creates an alternative origin story for an iconic slasher. The new series “Crystal Lake” does the same for the Friday the 13th franchise. Watch it now on Peacock.
