The Gore-Filled Trailer Drops for 'The Cycle' After Scoring Praise from Stephen King

Director Jordan Downey delivers a terrifying new cinematic nightmare in his latest horror release, The Cycle. This brutal film plunges viewers into a dark mystery filled with relentless death and tragedy. The story also offers a remarkably fresh twist on the classic werewolf genre. As a result, the movie seamlessly blends deep psychological trauma with shocking creature-feature carnage.

A Fantastic Cast

The narrative centers on Meg, a forensic anthropologist suffering from severe childhood heartbreak. Decades ago, her father suddenly abandoned her family without explanation. However, law enforcement officers recently discovered his strangely preserved body near a horrific crime scene. As a result, Meg must confront her father’s sinister secrets while analyzing the terrifying evidence. Star Deborah Ann Woll gives an exceptional performance as an adult shaped by unresolved trauma.

Woll gives her best performance in years, since her role in “True Blood.” She makes your heart break for her character, Meg. But even as she experiences the horrors, she feels grounded. She’s neither weak nor a badass. She’s a very human character with struggles and a determination to solve the mystery while confronting her trauma and trying to survive. She is also easy to empathize with and is relatable.

“Burn Notice” actor Jeffrey Donovan delivers strong supporting work throughout the film as he experiences trauma himself and works to track down the mysterious killer who is ripping person after person to shreds.

Tactile Gore and Practical Effects

Director Jordan Downey and co-writer Kevin Stewart create a deeply unsettling atmosphere throughout. The film prioritizes stunning practical creature effects over modern digital animation. As a result, every gore-filled scene feels extraordinarily realistic, visceral, and tactile. In fact, the terrifying creature design offers shocking moments that will leave your jaw on the floor. The design is fantastic; the creature is grotesque and terrifying.

The Twist

The twist is truly shocking. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it. Sure, we get werewolf movies all the time, but not like this. The creature keeps living even after its host dies, except during the full moon, when it transforms. That’s a fresh and surprising twist. The way the body keeps turning up in gruesome scenes keeps you on edge, and the big reveal comes late in the movie, which I truly appreciate, as the director lets the mystery and tension build.

As for the transformation itself, it’s fully revealed, and nasty, in the best possible way. The transformation felt like an homage to the iconic scene in Werewolf in London. And the sound of bones snapping and skin ripping was brutal. It was truly fantastic.

My One Complaint

Only one thing bothered me about the film: the trailer. If the studio had left out the few seconds of the transformation in the trailer, it would have been a complete surprise. That would have made the film even better. I don’t understand why studios keep revealing plot twists this way. This frequently ruins films. This, however, isn’t a strike against the movie, but a studio failure.

The Final Verdict

Ultimately, The Cycle stands out as a must-see horror highlight of the season. The movie delivers incredible suspense, emotional depth, and impressive practical monsters. In addition, the unpredictable plot keeps audiences guessing until the very end. Horror fans can stream this brutal, jaw-dropping film exclusively on Shudder right now, and we highly recommend it.
