Filmmaker Michael Dougherty is celebrating a major milestone for one of modern horror’s most beloved icons. Thirty years ago, the creator introduced the mysterious Halloween enforcer known as Sam to genre audiences. That debut came in a short, hand-drawn animated film titled Season’s Greetings. Consequently, the diminutive, burlap-masked character eventually inspired the 1996 cult classic horror feature Trick ‘r Treat. Now, Dougherty is honoring those independent artistic roots with an exciting new multimedia initiative.
The Return of a Festive Icon
On Halloween Eve, Dougherty unleashed a surprise trailer release that quickly energized the horror community. Titled Season’s Greetings 2: Mischief Night, the new project debuted as a retro Grindhouse-style teaser trailer. The director partnered with animator Cyrus T. Hayley at Dragline Pictures to create the vibrant animation. Fans are also debating whether the trailer previews a full upcoming project or serves as a faux homage. Dougherty has long teased a sequel; maybe this is it. Regardless, the release brings fresh energy to Sam’s long-standing mythology.
“Trick ’r Treat obviously became a huge part of Sam’s story, and I remain incredibly proud of that film,” says Dougherty. “But Trick ‘r Treat wasn’t the first chapter in Sam’s story, and it won’t be the last. It really started with this weird little hand-drawn animated short I made as a film student. And for the 30th anniversary, it felt like the perfect time to go back to those roots — handmade, independent and artist-driven — and see where Sam might wander next.”
Launching a Dedicated Digital Home
The surprise trailer coincides with the launch of Sam: The Soul of Halloween. This new digital hub gives the iconic character his first official online home. The platform features new animated shorts, custom illustrations, and creative artist collaborations across various mediums. Dougherty invited a diverse roster of creators to interpret Sam through their own distinct visual styles.
He’s also sharing his love for Sam on his YouTube channel, which features short films, a Halloween countdown, and more.
Returning to Handmade Independent Roots
Trick ‘r Treat remains a cornerstone of modern seasonal viewing for horror enthusiasts worldwide. However, Dougherty wanted to return to the handmade, student-film spirit that originally gave birth to the character. This anniversary initiative lets the filmmaker explore where Sam might wander next outside traditional studio boundaries. The project also highlights independent craftsmanship while expanding the lore for a new generation of fans.
Exclusive Anniversary Merchandise Arrives
Along with new creative content, the launch introduces an official online storefront for fans. The digital shop features limited-edition merchandise inspired by Sam’s original 1996 animated incarnation. Collectors can acquire exclusive apparel, artwork, and physical goods directly through the new platform. Genre enthusiasts can celebrate thirty years of Mischief Night tradition alongside the legendary pumpkin-headed enforcer.
For fans and new generations who want to relive the horror-filled charm of Sam, you can stream Trick ‘r Treat now on AMC+, HBO, and Hulu, or rent or buy it on Apple TV, Prime Video, and Fandango at Home. The film is also returning to Regal cinemas for Halloween.
