Japanese studio Toho is expanding its horror production slate with an exciting sci-fi survival thriller. Titled Leviathan, the intense space-set feature adapts Shiro Kuroi’s best-selling manga. The studio previously earned widespread international acclaim for hits like Godzilla Minus One and Exit 8. Currently in post-production, the adaptation promises a grim, highly suspenseful journey through deep space. Sci-fi horror fans can anticipate a brutal fight for survival set against a futuristic backdrop.

A Fatal Race for Life Support

The story takes place in 2127 aboard a damaged starship. After a catastrophic accident leaves a traveling vessel adrift, thirty-eight students find themselves hopelessly stranded in deep space. Dwindling oxygen creates an immediate crisis for the desperate teenagers onboard. The situation turns deadly when they discover only a single functioning life-support system remains. The surviving passengers turn against each other in a bloody battle to secure that one chance to live.

Uncovering the Tragic Logs

The original manga framing story begins when a trio of space looters boards the Leviathan’s derelict wreckage. While exploring the abandoned ship, the scavengers find a hidden diary belonging to a child named Kazuma. The journal slowly unfurls the harrowing, blood-soaked account of the passengers’ final hours. Originally serialized in Shonen Jump+ from 2022 to 2023, the manga earned massive acclaim for its psychological horror.

Creative Team and Cast

Directors Michihito Fujii and Ryohei Shingu co-directed the live-action feature adaptation. Fujii also co-wrote the intense screenplay with screenwriter Izumi Takahashi. Popular actors Shunsuke Michieda and Natsuki Deguchi lead the cast.

The sci-fi survival film officially debuts in Japanese theaters on February 11, 2027. Meanwhile, Paris-based sales company Goodfellas is handling international distribution outside of Asia.
