Forget Sharks: 'Hungry' is Bringing Hippos to the Horror Genre! Watch it Now on Digital!

The creature feature subgenre regularly churns out low-budget shark attacks and giant snake rampages. However, filmmaker James Nunn takes a far more unexpected approach with his breakout survival thriller Hungry. The aquatic horror movie follows a rampaging, highly territorial hippopotamus as it stalks tourists through the murky Louisiana swamplands. After a quiet theater release earlier this year, the independent feature recently hit home digital platforms, and it’s doing better than most.

Dominating the Streaming Charts

Without a massive studio marketing campaign or household A-list names, the modest creature feature quickly built massive viral momentum. According to global streaming metrics from FlixPatrol, the high-concept survival thriller currently stands as the number one streaming movie on Prime Video and number three overall. The film successfully outperformed major digital titles like Love of Your Life and Masterplan across domestic platform rankings. The movie is also the third-biggest title on the service overall, trailing only high-profile television series releases “Carrie” and “The Terminal List”.

A Terrifying Swamp Survival Premise

The story kicks off when a group of thrill-seeking vacationers boards a routine airboat tour through the bayou. Seeking an exclusive off-the-grid adventure, the tourists bribe their guide to navigate far off the established path. The group stumbles into an abandoned hippo breeding facility. The tourists soon realize they are trapped inside the hunting grounds of colossal, runaway killer beasts. What begins as a peaceful sightseeing expedition rapidly devolves into a brutal battle for survival.

Practical Gore and Veteran Talent

Director James Nunn assembled a strong ensemble cast to take on the territorial river monster—the survival drama stars Madison Davenport alongside veteran actor Joaquim de Almeida and Tracey Bonner. Legendary prosthetic makeup artist Dan Martin provided the sickeningly realistic practical effects. Known for his gruesome visceral work on Possessor and Infinity Pool, Martin delivers unsparing physical gore throughout every encounter.

The Brutal Reality of the Murder Potato

While the title might evoke childhood board game nostalgia, the film treats its animal antagonist with deadly seriousness. Real-world hippopotamuses represent some of nature’s most volatile predators, killing more humans annually in Africa than lions. Possessing a bone-crushing bite force of 1,800 pounds per square inch, these massive mammals easily outrun humans on land. Genre fans seeking relentless creature thrills can rent or purchase Hungry on Prime Video.
