After years of rumors, and delays, Blumhouse’s Spawn may actually finally be on its way soon. In October 2022, creator Tod McFarlane announced that he was teaming up with Blumhouse for a new Spawn movie starring Jamie Foxx, with Scott Silver, Matthew Mixon, and Malcolm Spellman set to pen the script. McFarlane has since stepped aside, and the movie is now searching for a new director.
It’s been pretty much radio silence until recently when Jason Blum gave a minor update during a talk with ComicBook.com. According to the horror heavy-hitter, the movie is still on the way and is expected to premiere in 2025.
“I would say you have a lot to hope for because it’s in very very active development,” Blum told ComicBook.com. “What needs to happen is that my fellow friends the writers and the studios need to figure out their differences and get back to writing, but we’ve got a great group of folks putting it together, and my hope is that that movie — my prediction is maybe we’ll actually see a Spawn movie in 2025. No promises, but that’s my prediction.”
What he’s referring to is the current writer’s strike with writers demanding fair pay for their services, and who could blame them? Spawn isn’t alone. The strike is currently affecting a ton of premiere dates, filming, and more.
Jamie Foxx’s recent hospitalization for a health crisis may also leave his role being recast. But there is no update about that yet.
Spawn was introduced in his comic, which debuted in May 1992. In 1997, New Line released the first film adaptation, starring Michael Jai White as the title character (trailer below). There was also an animated series with Spawn being voiced by Keith David.
In the 1992 movie, known for its terrible CGI, a former Black Ops soldier became a demon following his murder. He returns five years later to discover his wife has remarried his friend. There’s a new threat to the world, and Spawn must stop it before it’s too late.
We’ll keep you posted. Hopefully, production will begin sooner rather than later.
