After slithering into theaters with three sequels and a bizarre crossover with the Lake Placid franchise, the 1997 cult classic Anaconda is preparing to shed its skin for a brand-new movie.

Rumors about the future of the giant snake saga have been around for years. But the latest update from Jeff Sneider on The Hot Mic podcast brings some exciting news. According to Sneider, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent writer-director Tom Gormican is attached to pen and potentially helm the franchise’s next installment.

“An actor is not attached, and nothing is official and anything could change,” Sneider cautions. “Anaconda is going to be a meta-movie. And from what I understand… it’ll be something close to this… this isn’t the actual logline… it’s going to involve an actor or actors playing loose fictional versions of themselves who go off to make an Anaconda movie. All hell breaks loose.” Sneider adds that “[Gormican’s] writing it, I don’t think that directing deal is quite done.” Given Gormican’s experience with Unbearable Weight, which saw Nicolas Cage playing a fictionalized version of himself.

Anaconda: A New Nightmare

Luis Llosa directed the original Anaconda. It boasted an impressive cast, including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, and Danny Trejo. It followed a film crew taken hostage by a deranged hunter. They are dragged deep into the Amazon. With him on a quest to capture the world’s largest and deadliest snake.

Will any of the original movie’s cast return? That hasn’t been revealed. But we would love to see Lopez and Ice Cube return to battle giant snakes once more.

With Gormican’s comedic sensibilities and a fresh angle, this new Anaconda movie has the potential to be a creature feature that may leave you with ophidiophobia.
