Marriage counseling usually involves a therapist and a couch. However, for Dan and Lisa, it involves a secluded cabin and a fight to the death. Over Your Dead Body, the latest dark comedy thriller from IFC, puts a lethal spin on “working through things.” This R-rated bloodbath just dropped its first red-band trailer, promising a riotous mix of marital spite and high-stakes survival.
A Romantic Retreat (with Shotguns)
Jason Segel (Shrinking) and Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) star as a miserable couple attempting a “romantic reset” at a remote cabin. The honeymoon phase is long dead; now, they want each other to follow suit. Dan’s plan involves a speedboat and a watery grave, while Lisa prefers a more direct, shotgun-heavy approach.
Their mutual murder plots are rudely interrupted when a crew of actual criminals crashes the weekend. Suddenly, the toxic duo must decide whether to save their marriage or just their own skins. The trailer showcases the duo practicing “concerned partner” alibis and navigating kitchen-table hostage situations with the kind of comedic timing only a broken home can provide.
The Pedigree
Directed by Jorma Taccone ( MacGruber), the film brings a frantic, slapstick energy to the “prestige horror” subgenre. Penned by Saturday Night Live alumni Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney, the story is a remake of the 2021 Norwegian gore-fest The Trip.
This brutal ensemble features heavy hitters like Timothy Olyphant (Alien: Earth), Juliette Lewis (Yellowjackets), and Paul Guilfoyle (CSI). Produced by 87North (John Wick, Nobody), the fight choreography promises to be as inventive as it is brutal.
When You Can Watch
Over Your Dead Body has already generated significant heat on the festival circuit, taking home the Audience Award at SXSW. Here’s the good news: you don’t have to wait long to witness the chaos; it’s already in theaters and will be available on VOD from IFC on May 26. A word of advice: don’t watch it with your kids. It’s rated R for strong bloody violence, gore, pervasive language, and sexual content.
If you are looking for something to tide you over, Weaving’s Ready or Not 2: Here I Come has just landed on digital and VOD and is just as good, if not better, than the original.
