When it comes to creature features, cinema has given us a million sharks, countless alligators, and plenty of oversized bears. But there is only one hippo horror movie, and it’s officially stomping its way into your viewing schedule. I’m talking about Hungry.

Despite what the title might suggest, this is definitely not a whimsical, live-action adaptation of the classic Hasbro board game you played as a kid. There are no plastic marbles here—only tragedy, raw power, and a very high body count.

The Itinerary: A Louisiana Tour Gone Horribly Wrong

The story follows a group of thrill-seeking tourists who embark on a riverboat tour through the Louisiana swamplands. Lured by the promise of an “exclusive adventure”—which, in horror movie speak, translates directly to “no one is making it back to the hotel”—the group ends up completely off the map and very much on the menu.

They soon find themselves systematically hunted by a creature Hollywood has criminally overlooked until now: the hippopotamus. What follows is an action-packed, surprisingly fun survival flick that balances its brutal kills with a ton of genuine heart.

Behind the Scenes: A Chat with the Team

I sat down for a conversation with the film’s writer and director, James Nunn—the genre veteran who previously kept audiences holding their breath with the hit shark survival movie Shark Bait (and the high-octane One Shot series). We dug into what it takes to turn one of Earth’s deadliest real-world mammals into a cinematic slasher icon.

Joining the conversation were stars Madison Davenport (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, Sharp Objects) and Jim Meskimen (Parks and Recreation, The Grinch), who serve as the emotional anchor of the entire film. Madison brings a profound sense of empathy and emotion to her role as a survivor, while Jim delivers a deeply relatable, fatherly character that audiences will instantly fall for. Jim’s massive, long-running career in film, television, and voice acting brings a grounded weight to the chaos.

Watch Out For Hippos!
