Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the North Atlantic, Netflix is gearing up to unleash a spine-tingling new creature-thriller that proves the ocean holds way more than just cod and lobster.
The streaming giant has dropped the first teaser trailer for “Below.” It’s a six-episode coastal nightmare starring Josh Hartnett (Penny Dreadful, Trap, Oppenheimer). Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) and Mackenzie Davis (Station Eleven) also star.
Before dropping anchor on Netflix this October, the series will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 10.
A Small Town with Big Aquatic Problems
Filmed on location in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the series drops audiences into a tight-knit seaside village where the local wildlife has suddenly developed a taste for terror.
In the series, Calvin Penney (Hartnett) is a big‑hearted fisherman living in a small Newfoundland town. He is still haunted by his father’s mysterious death from decades ago. When a sea creature begins terrorizing his hometown, Calvin must fight to hold his close-knit community together. Determined to keep his son Wade (Heaton) and family safe, he teams up with a visiting marine researcher (Davis). Their mission? Confront the creature and reveal the island’s buried secrets before it’s too late.
A Stacked Ensemble in Dark Waters
Joining Hartnett, Heaton, and Davis in the fight against the deep-sea terror is an impressive supporting cast that includes Ruby Stokes (Lockwood & Co.), Kaleb Horn, Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), and Willow Kean.
Hailing from creator, showrunner, and executive producer Jesse McKeown, the series is also executive produced by Hartnett himself alongside Jessica Rhoades (Pacesetter), Chris Hatcher, Jamie Childs, Louise Sutton, and Sharon Hall.
If you like your small-town mysteries drenched in salt water and cold-water dread, mark your calendars. “Below” hits Netflix on October 8.
