The first trailer for Zach Cregger’s follow-up to the wildly unsettling Barbarian, titled Weapons, has just dropped. And it’s serving up some serious ominous vibes. If you thought Barbarian was weird and creepy, Weapons looks like it’s cranking that dial up to eleven.
A Chilling Trailer
The trailer reveals something seriously messed up: the strange and simultaneous disappearance of a bunch of kids in the middle of the night.
The whole thing starts with an alarm clock frozen at 2:17 am. The camera eerily glides through an empty kid’s bedroom, down the stairs, and through a wide-open front door. It reveals that a group of young people just vanished from their homes at the exact time, without any rhyme or reason. We get a chilling glimpse at the mysterious event. We see kids running through a dark neighborhood at night, their limbs flailing around in a profoundly unsettling, unnatural way. It’s like a scene out of a nightmare. But somehow, one member of the local class remains.
The marketing for Weapons took a seriously clever and creepy turn earlier this week with the launch of an in-universe website called “Maybrook Missing.” This thing went viral for a reason. It lists “cases” of missing children in the area, with chilling text that reads, “17 Local Children Leave Home Simultaneously at 2:17 am.” Authorities are baffled by the inexplicable disappearance, which has shaken the community to its core.”
A Connection?
And here’s where things get interesting. Below that text, the site not only shows the clips we mentioned but also has a link to a news story about a 28-year-old woman named Tess Marshall who escaped a rental property in Detroit “under shocking circumstances.” Sound familiar? It absolutely should. That’s the plot of Cregger’s Barbarian! We can only assume that Weapons and Barbarian are somehow connected from this brilliant Easter egg. Are they set in the same universe? The possibilities are both exciting and deeply unsettling.
The cast for Weapons features some heavy hitters like Josh Brolin, Julia Garner (fresh off her werewolf turn in Wolf Man), Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, Austin Abrams, and young Cary Christopher.
