Best known for playing Dean Winchester in “Supernatural” and the morally complex Soldier Boy in “The Boys,” Jensen Ackles has secured his next major television role. MGM+ has officially greenlit “Rules of Prey,” an eight-episode crime drama series based on John Sandford’s bestselling novel series.
Production is currently underway in Toronto, with Bruce Terris serving as creator, showrunner, and executive producer alongside Ackles.
A High-Stakes Psychological Battle
The series focuses on Lucas Davenport. He’s a brilliant former Minneapolis police detective who has retreated from law enforcement. Known for his unconventional tactics and willingness to bypass standard procedures. Davenport is, however, drawn back into action when a serial killer begins committing murders that are designed to taunt him. As the body count rises, the investigation evolves into an intense psychological game between the detective and a killer operating on a twisted personal code.
Literary Roots and Expanding Production Partnerships
The show adapts the long-running Prey novel series by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist John Camp, writing under the pseudonym John Sandford.
“Rules of Prey” is produced by MGM Television and Take 5 Productions for MGM+. It further solidifies Ackles’ ongoing relationship with Amazon MGM Studios.
A Packed Slate for the Television Star
This casting adds another high-profile project to Ackles’ busy schedule. In addition to starring in “Rules of Prey,” the actor is also set to return as Russell Shaw in the fourth season of “Tracker.” He will also reprise his fan-favorite role as Soldier Boy in “Vought Rising,” the 1950s-set “The Boys” prequel series, set to debut on Prime Video in 2027.
Set decades before Billy Butcher started slaughtering Supes, “Vought Rising” trades modern tech for a 1950s aesthetic. Series mastermind Eric Kripke describes the prequel as a “twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s.”
