The long-awaited resurrection of cinema’s most iconic action-adventure franchise has officially arrived. Production for the untitled fourth installment of The Mummy franchise is underway. Marking the triumphant screen reunion of Brendan Fraser as intrepid adventurer Rick O’Connell and Rachel Weisz as librarian-turned-heroine Evelyn Carnahan.
Newly surfaced set photos circulating on social media offer fans a first glimpse of Fraser and Weisz back in character. They sport vintage period attire and look lovingly at each other.
Direct Sequel Pipeline to the Original Blockbusters
Positioned as a direct sequel to 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns, the new feature bypasses later entries to reconnect directly with the heart of the original duology.
The filmmaking duo behind the film are Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, collectively known as Radio Silence. They are the same team behind hits like Ready or Not, Scream (2022), and Abigail.
While specific plot details remain locked in Universal’s vault, Fraser said cameras began rolling in early September. Reflecting on his return to physical action filmmaking, the Oscar-winning actor described the project as stepping back into step with an old friend.
A Returning Cast
Much of the original cast is returning alongside Fraser and Weiz. John Hannah, Kevin O’Connor, and Oded Fehr are also back. You’ll remember Hannah as Jonathan, O’Connor as the treacherous Beni, and Fehr as the ultimate Medjai heartthrob, Ardeth Bay.
October 2027 Theatrical Premiere
Fans will not have to wait quite as long as originally planned to see the O’Connell family battle ancient forces once again. Universal Pictures moved the film’s release date forward from its initial May 2028 slot. The Mummy 4 is now scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on October 15, 2027, delivering an epic blend of globetrotting adventure, ancient curses, and a nostalgic blockbuster vibe.
