Stephen King adaptations are truly everywhere, and we’ve got another exciting one arriving tonight: “The Institute,” MGM+’s intense new series based on King’s chilling 2019 novel.
The trailer sets an unsettling tone with a voiceover: “Things are going on that you would not believe.” And it gets even more disturbing when a child describes a horrific experiment they endured: “It feels like a nail is being hammered into your forehead.” Yikes!
What’s it About?
“The Institute” follows the story of teen genius Luke Ellis (played by Joe Freeman). A young man who is kidnapped. He wakes up in a mysterious facility called The Institute. It’s a place filled with children who all arrived the same way he did. They all also possess unusual abilities. Meanwhile, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (played by Ben Barnes) has come looking to start a new life. However, peace won’t last for long. His story and Luke’s are destined to collide in a terrifying way.
A Talented Cast Brings King’s World to Life
“The Institute” also stars an impressive lineup, including Mary-Louise Parker, Simone Miller, Fionn Laird, Hannah Galway, Julian Richings, Robert Joy, and Martin Roach.
This eight-episode series is directed and executive-produced by Jack Bender. Bender is known for the MGM+’s hit series “FROM,” which is returning for its fourth season. Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand) serves as writer and executive producer in a collaboration with MGM+ Studios.
King himself is on board as an executive producer, alongside Bender, Cavell, Gary Barber, Sam Sheridan, and Ed Redlich. Amazon Studios and MGM are producing the series.
