Bong Joon Ho’s legendary creature feature The Host is returning to big screens worldwide. Moviegoers can now experience the iconic monster movie, newly remastered in glorious 4K resolution. The landmark release celebrates 20 years since the Korean masterpiece first captivated global audiences. Special theatrical screenings also feature an exclusive conversation between Bong Joon Ho and director Edgar Wright.

A Quiet Day at the Riverbank

The terrifying story begins along the scenic banks of Seoul’s Han River. Gang-du works sluggishly at a small food stand operated by his family. Suddenly, his young daughter Hyun-seo confronts him for missing an important parent-teacher meeting. Gang-du tries to focus on his work and steps outside to complete a routine food delivery. However, he notices a large crowd gathering near the Han River Bridge.

A Desperate Rescue Mission Begins

Curious onlookers photograph an unusual biological shape hanging beneath the bridge. Unfortunately, the idyllic afternoon quickly descends into absolute bedlam and horrific violence. A massive, mutant creature climbs onto the crowded riverbank and begins devouring helpless bystanders and snatches Gang-du’s daughter.

Government officials rapidly isolate the region and declare the mutant a host for a dangerous virus. Military authorities force traumatized survivors into strict quarantine facilities near the riverbank. Gang-du grieves deeply until his phone suddenly rings in the middle of the night. His terrified daughter is calling from inside the sewer system where the monster nests.

Record-Breaking Domestic Box Office

The Host smashed domestic box-office records during its original 2006 theatrical run in South Korea. It sold over thirteen million tickets nationwide during its initial release. The massive audience response made it the highest-grossing South Korean film of its era.

The creature feature achieved widespread international acclaim following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival.  Foreign audiences embraced the film’s unique blend of family drama, political satire, and practical creature thrills.

Launchpad for Global Stardom

The commercial phenomenon solidified director Bong Joon Ho as a major international cinematic auteur. Its success also paved the way for future global hits like Snowpiercer and Parasite. The groundbreaking release remains a defining milestone for modern Korean genre cinema.
