Filmmaker Sam Raimi is partnering with the nonprofit organization Decentralized Pictures to discover emerging horror talent. Together, they officially launched the Sam Raimi Horror Award to empower rising independent storytellers. The initiative seeks directors with a unique, fresh perspective on genre filmmaking. The winning filmmaker also receives $25,000 in production funding to complete an original short horror film.
A Comprehensive Award Package
Beyond initial production capital, the grant recipient gains invaluable industry backing from seasoned professionals. Decentralized Pictures will provide mentorship and dedicated distribution across its upcoming streaming platform. The organization also handles marketing and promotional support for the completed short film. As a result, the award offers rising creators a complete pipeline from initial concept to global digital release.
Honoring a Legendary Master of Horror
Raimi has built an iconic cinematic legacy across decades of influential storytelling. From his groundbreaking filmography, which includes the Evil Dead franchise, Darkman, Drag Me to Hell, and the survival horror feature Send Help, Sam Raimi’s name is synonymous with scares. Throughout his career, Raimi demonstrated how horror can explore powerful human ideas alongside terrifying visual thrills. This new grant encourages applicants to push creative boundaries across psychological, supernatural, visceral, or comedic subgenres.
A Democratic Selection Process
Decentralized Pictures uses an innovative community-driven model supported by nonprofit American Zoetrope. Entrants pay a $25 submission fee that directly funds peer reviewers on the platform. Any film enthusiast can also join the platform for free and earn rewards by reviewing submitted projects. A distinguished panel, including Sam Raimi, Roman Coppola, and Emma Raimi, will select the final recipient from the community finalists.
Submission Requirements and Deadlines
Interested filmmakers can submit their project materials online now through December 31. Applicants must provide a compelling short video sample demonstrating their storytelling and visual capabilities. Creators must also submit a one-page project description detailing the plot synopsis and visual aesthetic. Entrants warrant full ownership of all submitted materials and intellectual property. Filmmakers can find complete eligibility rules and application links on the official Decentralized Pictures portal.
