One of those mysterious, zombie-causing viruses the kids are so into these days has ripped (chewed?) the bucolic community of Grey County a new asshole.
Enter: Ben Neilson (Adam Seybold), a (pretty much) blind dude who comes to in an ambulance without fuck-all of a clue that the world has devolved into an undead orgy. Of course the tension mounts as Blind Ben goes a-stumblin’ from one bitey mess to another, before crossing paths with Mara Madigan (Liv Collins…who also co-wrote the flick), a preg-o po-po. Together the duo make a go of surviving not only those pesky gut-munchers, but also the (understandably) trigger happy townsfolk.
Look; I’ll be the first to admit that the zombie apocalypse genre has gotten more play than the town whore in a one whore town…but dammit; Deadsight is pretty fuckin’ killer! Director Jesse Thomas Cook along with Writers Collins and Kevin Revie have created a monsterpiece of deliberately paced mounting tension.
Speaking of that tension; that shit wouldn’t be worth squat if those enduring it weren’t up to snuff; and let me tell ya, Collins and Seybold are up to the task as their rock solid acting chops make their characters sympathetic and easy to embrace…so we actually give a toss if their asses get eaten or not…well not like butt stuff…more like, you know actually devoured…fuck; and I’ve stumbled down that rabbit-hole again…
Also of note are both the excellent make-up effects on display that, while not reinventing the wicked wheel, are nevertheless incredibly well done…and the film’s rather clever use of color; with the brunt of the film presented in cold, stark grays and blues (appropriate given the late-fall/early-winter setting of the film) contrasting with the vibrant reds of the climax, which really helps effect the mood of the piece…and there comes my artsy-fartsy training; your’s cruelly earned that degree my creeps!
To put a beastly bow on it; Deadsight will satisfy not only those who still get a chub for zombie flicks, as well as those who think that shit is as moldy as the corpses the genre features!
