John Logan (“Penny Dreadful”) is making his feature directorial with the upcoming slasher They/Them (originally titled Whistler Camp), starring Kevin Bacon (Tremors). Set to premiere on Peacock, the official release date has just been announced and the first images shared.
The LBGTQ+ slasher, pronounced “They Slash Them,” is set at a conversion camp – as if that isn’t horrifying enough on its own – where a group of campers is sent for a week of “re-programming.” “As the camp’s methods become increasingly more psychologically unsettling, the campers must work together to protect themselves. When a mysterious killer starts claiming victims, things get even more dangerous.”
Bacon stars as Owen the camp’s director and is joined by Anna Chlumsky, Carrie Preston, Theo Germaine, Quei Tann, Austin Crute, and Monique Kim, along with others.
For those who don’t know, conversion camps are controversial, horrible places where parents send their LBQTQ+ children in an attempt to cure the gay away. These places often use horrible methods to “cure” campers including light torture and more. You can learn more about the camps here.
“They/Them has been germinating within me my whole life. I’ve loved horror movies as long as I can remember, I think because monsters represent ‘the other’ and as a gay kid I felt a powerful sense of kinship with those characters who were different, outlawed, or forbidden,” said writer-director John Logan. “I wanted to make a movie that celebrates queerness, with characters that I never saw when I was growing up. When people walk away from the movie, I hope they’re going to remember the incredible love that these kids have for each other and how that love needs to be protected and celebrated.”
Scott Turner Schofield (Euphoria; The Craft: Legacy), Howie Young (Mission: Impossible III, Hit and Run), and Jon Romano (Firestarter (2022), Vengeance) are executive producing with Jason Blum (Get Out, The Invisible Man) and Michael Aguilar (Penny Dreadful, Kidding) producing.
They/Them will premiere on Peacock on Friday, August 5, 2022.
