Short Film Review: Girls Night

Halloween night is approaching and three young women, Alyson, Chloe and Jess. have decided that a night out among scores of people is not something they’re interested in. Instead they would rather have their own girls night in, enjoying food and drink, and each others company. As Alyson is preparing for this intimate gathering, a creepy masked stranger startles her while intrusively snooping around the kitchen window. Despite dropping and breaking a plate out of surprise, she will at least have an interesting story to share later. But as the evening wears on, and win is consumed, andtales of Bloody Mary are bandied about, the trio may find there is still more to the story where the masked stranger is concerned. The story behind David Teixeira’s short film has a familiar tone, but is lacking some elements to drive the narrative and build suspense or fear. Also the concept of a horror story featuring a masked stranger and urban legends,

Reel Nightmare is a “Reel” Flop

I usually try to be pretty kind with movie reviews and I am fairly easy to please, but I have been racking my brain to find the pros outweighing the cons for Armand Petri’s Reel Nightmare. I watched the movie in a couple of sittings and absolutely couldn’t get hooked. I could see where the film was going and what Petri was trying to do, but it just fell absolutely flat. Not only was the acting blah, but the story was lost in the absolute cluelessness of the characters. Little things like not even mentioning the blacked out eyes of one of their friends after being possessed. Madeleine Heil, who plays the lead Sophie, was actually pretty good. But other than that, I’m sorry. Over the top stereotypes of horror tropes, homosexuality, machismo, and damsel in distress were laughable if not offensive. On the positive side, the plot was tried and true and the effects (both makeup and paranormal) really

Woman (In Horror) Crush Wednesday: Felissa Rose

Horror legend status for a character in a horror film, this is an accolade that is normally attributed to the villains and either the last man standing or more often the final girl. It’s not very often that the villain and final girl happen to be the same character. But for a 13 year old Felissa Rose, this would be the case…well, sort of. And it would be this role, which incidentally was her very first, that would immediately solidify her position as a horror legend. This Long Island native would make her debut in the role of Angela Baker in the 1983 classic summer camp horror flick, Sleepaway Camp. All the while Felissa knew that she was the killer in question, but it was a shock even to her what the big reveal at the end of the film would be. At this point I’m not even calling the twist ending a spoiler, because the movie is nearly 34

New Predator Will be Bigger and Bloodier (updated)

In preparation for the upcoming Predator film, I just watched the original and was reminded of the franchise’s greatness. Yeah, it’s been watered down a bit over a few movies and crossovers (although they were fun in their own right). I was thrilled to hear that Shane Black (who played Hawkins in the original) is directing the upcoming Fred Dekker written film. And even more thrilled at the news Black posted on his twitter account. @BonadfideBlack and, just to be clear… PG-13 is for pussies. Spines bleed… a lot. Now, gore doesn’t guarantee a good movie, but Black knows and loves the franchise, promises a return to the spirit of the first movie and rumors that it will be set in an urban location with a bigger, and stronger genetically engineered predator (in case an invisible, knife wielding alien with a laser on his shoulder wasn’t good enough). The ever- growing cast includes Boyd Holbrook, Jacob Tremblay, Sterling K. Brown,

Movie Review: VooDoo Is More Of A VooDon’t

“Want to get away?” Most of you probably remember that line from the Southwest Airlines commercials that showed people in awkward or embarrassing situations who desperately seemed to need a break from their lives. In fact, that’s all a vacation really is…a break. Whether it’s a week or a month, taking a holiday is not the equivalent of a total escape from ones problems. It’s a lesson that Dani will quickly learn when she amscrays from her home in New Orleans to visit her cousin Stacy in LA. Her plan is to use this time away from home as an escape from the drama of a nasty and painful breakup with a man she had no idea was still married the entire time they were dating. But wait, there’s more. The man she was dating just happened to be married to a crazy voodoo priestess. And while the common concept of female fury is scary enough, it becomes quite diminished

Hulu Dishes More Details About Castle Rock

Hey there my Little Monsters, last week we learned that Stephen King and J.J. Abrams are again collaborating on a new series, Castle Rock, that will be shown exclusively oh Hulu. This announcement surely had many of King’s fans shivering with more antici. . .pation than Brad and Janet at Dr. Frank N. Fureter’s little soirée. Today Hulu continues to keep the interests of eager fans piqued by releasing the synopsis of the series which will consist of 10 episodes in all, with production rumored to be starting later this year. And now…the aforementioned synopsis. Castle Rock is being described as, “A psychological-horror series set in the Stephen King multiverse, Castle Rock combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King’s best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland. The fictional Maine town of Castle Rock has figured prominently in King’s literary career: Cujo, The Dark Half,

Stephen King And J.J. Abrams Welcome You To CASTLE ROCK

Castle Rock, it’s a place Stephen King fans know well or at the very east they’re familiar with the name. It’s the fictional town in King’s home state of Maine, that is the setting for nine of the author’s works and is mentioned in two dozen others. Hold on to your hats and what have you, my Little Monsters, we’re about to become a little more familiar this imaginary Maine locale. With the help of J.J. Abrams, Mr. King will be releasing a limited run series on Hulu. The title of the series, if you haven’t already guessed, is Castle Rock and will be based on works written by King. These two bespectacled creative geniuses previously collaborated on another Hulu original series 11.22.63, which was adapted from King’s novel of the same title. Castle Rock, as was 11.22.63, will be produced by Warner Bros. TV and Bad Robot, with Sam Shaw and Dusty Thomason being brought in this time to

Woman (in Horror) Crush Wednesday: Danielle Harris

Hello again my Little Monsters, as previously promised I have returned to highlight yet another lovely and talented woman of the horror genre. This particular woman in horror, is one that I first became aware of back in the heyday of brick and mortar video stores and VHS movie rentals. Of course Danielle Harris was a young girl then but has grown up to be one of the most recognized faces in the genre. In the spring of 1988, Danielle had beaten out several young actresses, including Melissa Joan Hart, to play the role of Laurie Strode’s young daughter, Jamie Lloyd, in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. Prior to taking on this role, she had only acted in one episode each of the TV series One Life to Live and Spencer for Hire. Danielle would reprise her role of Jamie LLoyd nearly one year later in Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. At the age of 12
