When she had a brush with death while undercover, New York City police officer Jane Vasko not only recovered, she became unstoppable as Painkiller Jane. The film adaption of the ‘Painkiller Jane’ comic has been in the works for a while. Now, it seems they have found their star, Jessica Chastain. Chastain will also be producing the film under the banner of her company Freckle Films. Lotus Entertainment, Solipsist Films, Bill Johnson, Jim Seibel, and Ara Keshishian will also be producing along with Jimmy Palmiotti who co-wrote the comic with Joe Quesada, according to Deadline. At one time Jen and Sylvia Soska were attached to direct, but Deadline did not mention if the sisters were still on board. Jessica Chastain has starred in a wide range of films including: ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’, ‘The Martain’, ‘Mama’, ‘Texas Killing Fields’, and others. She also co-stared alongside Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam in 2015’s haunting picture ‘Crimson Peak’ as Lucille

Today, I had a conversation with author Scotty McCoy. We discussed his latest book ‘The Ultimate Friday the 13th Trivia Book’, 13 chapters, 1300 trivia questions, about one of the genre’s most famous films. If you are a fan of the film or a fan of the genre you will be happy to know that you can buy the book on Amazon now. Horror Fuel: “Why horror?” SM: “I have always been fascinated with horror and obsessed with Friday the 13th. Growing up I always watched AMC Fear Fest. I love the excitement. Horror is like an adventure.” Horror Fuel: “So I guess it would be easy to say that Friday the 13th is your favorite?” SM: “Yes it is. My favorite is ‘Friday the 13th Part 7: The New Beginning. But Halloween runs a close second. In fact, I’m working on a Halloween trivia book now. I only have a few more chapters to go. I’m on chapter 9.

Eric Heisserer (The Thing, Lights Out) revealed on Reddit earlier today, while promoting his upcoming scifi-thriller ‘Arrival‘, that he has fired himself as screenwriter from the ‘Sandman’ project he was attached to. The reason, he feels that ‘Sandman’ should be a series, not a film. An adaption of ‘Sandman’ has been attempt several times since the early 1990’s, but has ran into trouble each time. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was attached to star, direct and produce, but stepped away after the project moved from Warner Bros. to New Line back in March. As of now, the film seems to be limbo. The film is an adaption of Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel series by the same name. The artwork in the graphic novels were created by Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg, Jill Thompson and others. The story follows Dream aka Sandman aka Morpheus, who rules over the world of dreams and is one of the seven Endless. Sandman was one of only five graphic

Minstrel’s Bargain by Richard Ayre was a book I’d been wanting to read for quite a while. Richard has three books to his credit, the most notable of which to our readers here at Horror Fuel is Bad Neighborhood, the multi-author horror anthology I put together with the help of a Kickstarter campaign last year. With that said, going in I was only loosely familiar with the author’s work, and wasn’t quite sure of what to expect from something which promised to be “heart-pounding pulp horror”. In recent years, “pulp” has been a catch all term, and the book description didn’t give me much to go on. With that said, I know from personal experience reading and writing Richard’s work in the past that he’s an excellent writer, so I was optimistic despite the sparse description. A recently rediscovered manuscript circa 1926, titled The Cancer of Superstition, co-written by Lovecraft was found in a collection of items from an old magic shop. The collection belonged to Beatrice Houdini and was commissioned by her husband, the legendary escape artist Harry Houdini. The 31-page work delves into and condemns superstition through out time. The Cancer of Superstition was not the first time that Lovecraft and Houdini worked together. Lovecraft often served as a ghostwriter for Houdini. The manuscript, co-written by CM Eddy, was meant to be a ‘campaign’ against superstition, but was sadly never finished. Houdini died soon after the project began and Houdini’s wife Beatrice made the choice not to pursue having it finished. The last line of the last written page is classic H.P. Lovecraft, “Most of us are heathens in the innermost recesses of our hearts.” H.P. Lovecraft & Harry Houdini Potter & Potter Auctions of Chicago will sell the manuscript at an auction containing

Dark Horse Comics has announced a new lovecraftian comic titled Weird Detective from writer Fred Van Lente (Conan the Avenger, Resurrectionists) and illustrator Guiu Vilanova (Conan the Avenger). From the Press Release: Cthulhu cops, the Innsmouth Mafia, telepathic cats and other crimes against sanity stalk the streets of New York in this pulpy stew of crime, horror and mystery from the writers of Marvel Zombies and X-Men Noir. The genre-bending five-issue miniseries includes colors by Josan Gonzalez and Dark Horse newcomer Mauricio Wallace. New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry made an exciting announcement earlier today on Facebook. He informed fans that his next project will be co-written with George A. Romero, the father of the modern zombie genre. The title of the upcoming novel will be Horror of the Living Dead. The anthology, will be filled with original stories set in the 48 hours surrounding the events of Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. John Russo, who co-wrote Night of the Living Dead, will pen one of the tales featured in Horror of the Living Dead along with pieces written by Brad Thor, Chuck Wendig, Brian Keene, David Wellington, Jay Bonansinga, Isaac Marion, Joe Lansdale, Mira Grant, Joe McKinney, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Mike Carey, Brandon and Neal Shuterman and Sanda and Ryan Brown . Horror of the Living Dead should be on shelves in early 2017.
