David Bruckner’s backwoods film The Ritual is preparing to open in UK theaters this October. While it would have been nice to have Bruckner’s Friday the 13th movie which was canceled just weeks before it was set to begin filming, The Ritual looks like it is going to be solid film. In the film, four friends from college head off into the Scandinavian wild in an effort to get away from it all and reconnect with each other. Soon the trip turns into a nightmare when they take a shortcut and end up lost. While trying to find their way back to civilization, they come across what seems to be an abandoned cottage. Inside they discover ancient artifacts on the wall and bones scattered on the floor and what looks like a sacrifice. Soon the men discover that something is stalking them. Three new cast members for Netflix’s series re-imagining of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ have been announced. Henry Thomas and Elizabeth Reaser are reuniting with director Mike Flanagan, who they worked with on the set of Ouija: Origin of Evil, and have been cast alongside Kate Siegel, the actress who played the lead in Flanagan’s invasion thriller Hush. The three join the cast that already includes Carla Gugino and Michel Huisman. Directed by Flanagan, the 10-episode series is from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV and Paramount TV. The novel has already been adapted for film twice , once in 1963 and again in 1999. Both films were titled The Haunting. In the novel “four seekers arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a “haunting”; Theodora, his lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill

The X-Files: Cold Cases is a new full-cast audio drama that launched on July 18. Last year, fans were treated to a long awaited return of the hit sci-fi show that had us all looking to the skies. Back in April Hulu announced that they had an adaption of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s IDW comic, Lock & Key, in the works. Originally, Scott Derrickson (Sinister) was attached to direct the pilot for the one-hour series. Now, Deadline is reporting Derrickson has stepped away due to a scheduling conflict with his other series, Snowpiercer. Andy Muschietti will be taking Derrickson’s seat in the directors chair. Muschietti must really be a fan of the King family, after adapting Stephen King’s IT and now adapting King’s son’s (Joe Hill) comic. The series centers around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. With the success of The Shallows and 47 Meters Down, which opened in theaters this past weekend, it’s no surprise that sharks on the minds of studios. With the giant shark film Meg, directed by Jon Turteltaub, still a year away from arriving in theaters, it has already been said that the film will be open to sequels. Steve Alten, the author of the novel that film is is based on, told Bloody Disgusting that there will indeed be sequels to the film starring Jason Statham, Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis, and Jessica McNamee. As for the MEG sequels – absolutely,” Alten said. “If the movie does well, there will be sequels. Of course, that goes for any successful Hollywood movie.” There will be no trouble finding a storyline for a sequel. Though the auction giant holds weekly internet sales in their comics/comic art department, this one stands out due to the plethora of near-forgotten horror titles from the “anything goes” days before the Comics Code toned down comic book terror. #AmericanCarnage: Sci Fi Short Stories by Pochassic is a new short book by the author of Flesh Without Soul which I reviewed when it came out a few years ago. I was curious to see what this book offered after enjoying the other. Book Description: Sci-fi short stories from the edge of sanity, Endless Horizon, a family having a conversation at the end of the world. Enlightenment Sucks, not all sages are created equal. Pride, a heroic Janitor battles zombies. The Trial, obedience to Galactic Law is freedom. The Big Why SuperMarket, There is more going on in the frozen food aisle than you think. The book is only 22 pages long and filled with several science fiction stories. The stories aren’t related but do have an overarching theme of hopelessness as most occur in dire or dystopian situations. It makes for a very quick read (again, it’s 22 pages long), so it’s definitely worth it for Kindle Unlimited readers.

Stephen King adaptions are everywhere these days (not that we’re complaining). King’s son, Joe Hill, has inherited his father’s talent. AMC has noticed and has put into development a TV series based on Hill’s third novel, NOS4A2 (Nosferatu). The New York Times bestseller, a supernatural thriller, centers on Victoria McQueen, a woman with a gift for finding things. She sets out on a mission to find a superhuman kidnapper and rescue his victims. According to The Wrap, AMC has begun a writers’ room for the series, part of AMC’s script-to-series model that appoints a group of writers to produce a “season bible” and write multiple episodes. After those are complete the network will decide if it wants to go ahead with the show. Jami O’Brien will serve as executive producer for the series which is a co-production of AMC Studios and Tornate.

June is here, and Days of the Dead is nearly upon us. IS nearly upon us? Yes my Little Monsters, I know it sounds grammatically incorrect, but it’s not…trust me. The reason why it is, in fact, correct is because I happen to be referring to a singular event, the annual horror convention that will be returning to Indianapolis at the end of June. Of course since it’s a three day event, I could refer to it in the plural form…but let’s not get hung up on semantics. Days of the Dead will officially kick off the weekend’s festivities at 5 PM Friday June 30th and run through Sunday July 2nd. As per usual, the fine folks at Days of the Dead will make it possible for fans to meet genre icons and mingle with fellow horror junkies.
