To: New Line Cinema From: B Harrison Smith Re: Friday the 13th: Tommy Jarvis vs. Jason Vorhees Make Tommy vs. Jason. You’re sitting a goldmine. I am told the rights to Friday the 13th are a mess. Paramount owns some, you own some. Some are parceled out to TV while the films retain others and the characters. I’ve heard one tale that both studios share custody over the franchise like a divorced couple. I have no idea if this is true. What I do know is that the ownership of rights has become so convoluted that no one seems to have a definitive answer. The legal octopus is strangling you from making another killing and I’m willing to bet it could be straightened out. At the risk of shooting myself in the foot and giving away my thoughts for someone to steal, here is a proposal to get Jason out of development hell. I attended two meetings in Los Angeles

Director James Wan has just filming ‘The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist‘. It has recently been announced that he will also be serving as producer for the movie adaption of ‘The Boy Who Drew Monsters’. Newline has hired Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing to pen the script for the film. Goldberg will also be serving as a producer. The novel, by the same name, was written by the ‘New York Times’ Best Selling author Keith Donohue. The book follows a young boy who Asperger’s. The boy almost drowned several years before and has since developed agoraphobia. As a coping mechanism, he draws, mostly monsters. The boy’s illustrations begin to come to life, including the monsters he has drawn. As someone who has a young family member with Asperger’s, I can only imagine the terror that the boy in the novel faces. For those of you who are not familiar with Asperger’s, let me fill you in. Norman Bates Is Coming Home… Summer, 1983. No Internet. No DVD extras. No “sneak peaks.” There were a handful of magazines to get your entertainment and especially your horror news and Fangoria was mine. I got my first subscription in 1980 and kept it through most of high school. At one point my mother asked me, “Are you sure you don’t want Playboy or something?” Unlike Norman Bates, I had plenty of girlfriends. Boobs I could see any time, but horror? That was serious shit and it came in the mail addressed to me. The slasher film dominated 80s horror. Carpenter’s Halloween hit in 1978 and the original Friday the 13th was ripping off at its heels, and both birthed franchises that spanned an entire decade and beyond. Psychopaths with knives and a variety of tools populated movie houses and late night cable. Most horror scholars will acknowledge the sub genre was peaking around 1983. Friday the 13th was winding

Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to adapt the Japanese graphic novel series ‘Death Note’, written by Tsugumi Ohba with art by Takeshi Obata, into a live action film. The film will be directed by ‘You’re Next’ director Adam Wingard, according to THR. The series follows Light Yagami, a high school student. A bored God of Death, Ryuk, puts a book in Light’s path, called a Death Note, giving Light the power of life and death with the stroke of a pen. Light is determined to use the Death Note for good, by riding the world of evil. Only one member of the cast has been revealed so far. “The Fault in Our Stars’ actor Nat Wolff has been cast in the role of Light Yagami.

Horror Master Clive Barker will be serving as Executive Producer for an upcoming TV series based on his 1987 novel ‘Weaverworld’ for the CW. The series will be written by Jack Kenny (Warehouse 13). The series is said to be an updated version of the novel. In the TV adaption an app designer teams up with a pastry chef who has just discovered that she is destined to be the guardian of a mythological realm. The portal to the world can be found inside an old Savannah mansion. Together the two must fight evil forces who want to rule the magical world. Barker’s novel is set in the 1980’s in Liverpool, England. To Clear A Few Things Up A few myths need to be dispelled about the 1980 Robin Williams film, Popeye. It was NOT a boxoffice failure. It was made for 20 million and grossed well over 60 million. While deemed a “disappointment” by Paramount Pictures, it hardly failed. 2. It is NOT Robin Williams’s worst film. I will argue it is his best, hands down. Like Williams and its director, the film paid a price for breaking away from formula. Popeye is fucking art, so there, I said it. Popeye fought Cynema and lost the first few battles, but I think it won the war. It was Robin Williams’s first film, and almost his last. It’s been called a mess, incomprehensible, a misfire, a disaster and a bomb. Bear with me as I show how this unique film stands up against Cynema. Most of you remember the 2007 film ‘The Mist’ directed by Frank Darabont and starring Thomas Jane, which was based on Stephen King’s novella about a mysterious mist that crept across a small town and the strange beasts in the mist that made meals out of the unfortunate residents that ventured outside. Deadline announced the news this afternoon that The Weinstein Company and Dimension Television are banding together to develop a television series based on ‘The Mist’, reportedly with the blessing of Stephen King. The series will be written by Christian Torpe, The series will tell an original story about a mist that creeps into a small town and unleashes havoc and psychological terror as the residents fight to survive the supernatural things inside the mist and each other. This year I represented the ZADF at Dragon Con. It was no great imposition. I was going anyway. I go every year. The only real difference is this year I’ll be writing about it. I’m guessing that many of you have never heard of Dragon Con, and are probably wondering what the hell I’m talking about. Have you heard of Comic Con in San Diego? You probably have. It has become a huge event every year that draws massive crowds and gets national media coverage. What many people don’t realize, is that Comic Con is just one of many Cons. There are conventions devoted to comic books, video games, table top gaming, fantasy, science fiction, anime, and of course horror; then there is Dragon Con. Dragon Con covers all of those things and more. It takes place in Atlanta, GA and has been around for a while (it started back in 1987). I’ve been attending since I was a kid
