Movie Review: Max Reload and the Nether Blasters (2020)

Max Jenkins (Tom Plumley) and his pals Reggie (Joey Morgan) and Liz (Hassie Harrison) spend most of their time, free and otherwise, playin’ a Warcraft-esque MMORPG, but those fabricated adventures are about to become all to real… You see, Max works at a video game store… in fact all of his pals do; and it’s within those confines that our hero discovers a long lost Colecovision game, Nether Dungeon by name, that when conquered unleashes an ancient curse upon the small town our protagonists call home. Soon Max, Reggie, and Liz must face the Nether, along with the help of one of the game’s creators, Eugene Wylder (Greg Grunberg), and their level of success will determine the fate of the entire world! One of the greatest assets to Max Reload and the Nether Blasters is the mythology the flick conjures up around the fictitious video game that causes so much trouble for Max n’ friends. There’s a brief television documentary

Movie Review: Shifter (2020)

Writer/director Jacob Leighton Burns delivers an engaging character study of a socially awkward young woman who is self-taught well enough to build a time machine in the science fiction/horror feature Shifter. A microbudget independent feature, the film relies on the lead performance of Nicole Fancher and the story behind her character Theresa Chaney rather than elaborate special effects. Theresa sacrificed much of her life, including going to university, to take care of her now deceased father on their rural homestead. She is well versed enough in science to create the aforementioned time machine, and after experimenting successfully with her pet cat, she experiments with it herself. The good news is that the time travel works well enough for her to get revenge on a pompous date, but the bad news is that it takes a physical toll on her body that gets worse each time she uses the device. The time machine and its effects also affect Theresa’s job performance

Blu-ray Review: Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6 (1952 – 1961)

The last five Universal Horror Collections brought to us courtesy of those delightful devils over at Scream Factory have been creepy cornucopias containing a beastly bevy of fiendishly fun fright flicks (Don’t believe me? Head here, here, here, here and lastly here, to read my thoughts for your own sinister self)! Let’s see if Volume 6 lives up to it’s preternatural predecessors! Starting things off we have The Black Castle from 1952: Sir Ronald Burton (Richard Greene) is playin’ sleuth and diving into the disappearance of a few of his pals… pals that payed a visit to the ornate Austrian estate of Count von Bruno (Stephen McNally). You see, ol’ Bruno is pissed as all get-out at the leaders of a British military force that got the native population of colonial occupied Africa to hand Big B his ass. So that explains where those friends of Burton’s got off to… but Burton was part of that action, and soon finds

Blu-ray Review: Tales From the Darkside: The Movie (1990)

Scream Factory is set to release the fearsome feature version of beloved arcane anthology program Tales From the Darkside, and I have had a chance to feast my eerie eyeballs upon it. So as I literally always do, here’s a revoltin’ review! Tales From the Darkside begins with it’s wrap-around segment; the story of a nice, upper-class type dame named Betty (Debbie Harry… yup, good ol’ Blondie!) who just so happens to have a kid (Matthew Lawrence… who has been in tons of things, the best in my opinion being Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad… I loved that fuckin’ goofy shit so damn much!) locked in a cage… a kid she intends on cooking and eating! He manages to buy sometime however as he offers to read some yarns from the eponymous book… The first story we are presented with is Lot 249, which refers to a strange delivery received by Edward Bellingham (Steve Buscemi)… a brainiac who has been cock-blocked from

Political Horror ‘La Llorona’ Out Today On Shudder

Director Jayro Bustamante‘s combines a Latin American fable as a metaphor for Latin American struggles in La Llorona, not to be confused with Michael Chaves’ 2019 movie The Curse of La Llorona. Written by Bustamante and Lisandro Sánchez, the film centers on an indignant retired general Enrique who finally faces trial for the genocidal massacre of thousands of Mayans decades ago. As a horde of angry protestors threatens to invade their opulent home, the women of the house—his haughty wife, conflicted daughter, and precocious granddaughter—weigh their responsibility to shield the erratic, senile Enrique against the devastating truths being publicly revealed and the increasing sense that a wrathful supernatural force is targeting them for his crimes. Meanwhile, much of the family’s domestic staff flee, leaving only loyal housekeeper Valeriana until a mysterious young Indigenous maid arrives. María Mercedes Coroy, Margarita Kénefic, Sabrina De La Hoz, and Julio Diaz star in La Llorona, produced by Jayro Bustamante, Gustavo Matheu, Georges Renand, and

Movie Review: La Llorona

In Guatemalan/French co-production La Llorona, director Jayro Bustamante offers up a historical and political spin on the South American legend of the titular “Weeping Woman” ghost. The result is an eerie film that delivers the supernatural goods along with topical drama. Ailing, aged military dictator General Enrique Monteverde (Julio Diaz) is confined to his home after a court decision that finds him guilty of war crimes against the indigeous Kaqchikel people is overturned by his cronies. Guatemalan citizens including Kaqchikel people protest outside his mansion around the clock. Stuck inside with the General are his embittered, witchcraft-practicing wife Carmen (Margarita Kenéfic); their physician daughter Natalia (Sabrina De La Hoz); her young daughter Sara (Ayla-Elea Hurtado); and head servant Valeríana (María Telón). After one night when the General hears a woman wailing and investigates with a gun in hand, all of the staff members except Valeríana resign in fear. A new servant named Alma (María Mercedes Coroy) is hired, and from

Blu-ray Review: The Wretched (2019)

Ol’ Ben (John-Paul Howard) is travelling the bumpy-ass road of adolescence and seemingly hitting every pothole; to wit: his parents are separated, he has no wheels, and he’s busting ass working a lame job at the local marina… oh, and he has to deal with being the only one that knows some ancient evil or other (specifically the kind of wicked witch that crawls full-born from the carcass of a deer… as is usually the case, amirite?) has gotten it’s hooks into the metal A.F., MILF, next door neighbor Abbie (Zarah Mahler)… putting her family, and everyone else truth be told, in preternatural peril! Look dude, we’ve all seen this one before; you get the “kid” no one believes witnessing someone being turned evil (whether it’s aliens, demons, witches… that’s all ghoulish gravy baby), yet no one swallows the seemingly insane yarn… which of course turns out to be terrifyingly true… but I’ll be damned if The Wretched (or more
