It’s that time of year as 2022 is coming to a close and along with it many game releases. This year was a busy review year, and going through the list I was able to come up with 15 horror games that I reviewed ranked from bad to good. It’s a long list so let’s start with one of the worse games reviewed this year, shall we? 35MM This Russian-made first-person game is labeled as a “Survival Horror” taking place in a post-apocalyptic world. The scariest thing about this game was how horrifically boring it was with a lack of scares and action. The game is more of a depressing walking simulator. Mothmen 1966 An 80s-style DOS game about a group of characters trying to survive a night with multiple Mothmen attacking them. The premise sounded promising but the game copped out on that. The game’s slow pace, and abrupt ending (just as a story was actually forming!) I wanted

From director Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) comes Prey for the Devil, the best possession film I’ve seen in years! The film centers on Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers), who believes she is answering a calling to be the first female exorcist…but who or what called her? In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, Ann seeks a place at an exorcism school reopened by the Catholic Church. Until now, these schools have only trained priests in the Rite of Exorcism – but a professor (Colin Salmon) recognizes Sister Ann’s gifts and agrees to train her. Spanish filmmaker Narciso Ibáñez Serrador is a true punk rock filmmaker (yeah this is a weird way to start a review, but bear with me cats n’ creeps). Having dug on American horror and anthology series such as The Outer Limits, Thriller, and the like, the ambitious filmmaker just said “Fuck it, I can do this shit too.”… except he said it in Spanish (if at all)… and he did just that with his series Tales To Keep You Awake (albeit with way more vicious violence and sweet, sweet grizzly gore than all of those show’s combined)! Comprised of a series that ran from 1966 – 1968, a stand alone 1974 special, and a small revival series from 1982, Tales is chock full of adaptations of work from masters such as Edgar Allan Poe, Ray Bradbury, and Robert Bloch… not to mention a direct swipe or two from the aforementioned TV shows. Lonny (Justin Gocke, whom you may remember as Raymond Burr’s grandson in the American inserts of Godzilla ’85) heads down New Zealand-way to visit his Aunt Leah (a delightful performance from Dame Pat Evison)… but who he is really there to visit is his Grandpa, Vernon Cooger (The Munsters‘ Al Lewis); a delightfully daffy ol’ coot whom Lonny’s monster-obsessed kiwi pal Kanziora (Milan Borich) is convinced is a vampire. Then Cooger dies, so that theory was right shit, wasn’t it? The End. Oh, except Cooger does come back to life, as he actually is a vampire… huh, there’s truth in advertising after all! Now as stated, Cooger is a vampire, but one that has chosen a (mostly) mortal life that allows him to age and eventually die, but that doesn’t stop him to getting up to a few rounds of Grade-A shenanigans once back among the living along with the help of Lonny and Kanziora… who in turn have to

In deepest, darkest Transylvania; Dr. Wolfgang (Barbarian‘s Richard Brake) along with his sidekick Floop (Jorge Garcia, Lost) have created life in the Frankenstein-vein with Herman Munster (Westworld‘s Jeff Daniel Phillips); a walkin’ wonder of song, dance, and stand-up comedy! Meanwhile, ancient vampire The Count (better known as Grandpa, and played here by prominent character actor Daniel Roebuck) is trying to get his daughter Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie) hitched pronto to little success… but guess who she ends up falling head-over-heels for? What follows is a wicked whirlwind courtship, and before long Herman has inadvertently sold The Count’s ancestral home, because while he does have a brain in his head it isn’t a particularly functioning one. Newspaperman Paul Henson (Dino Tripodis) moves from the Windy City to the middle of nowhere (which is proven to be every bit as windy, and pretty damn rainy as well) and immediately gets up to his usual newspaper biz. As fate and the script would have it, Paul is up to his asshairs in stories to publish as the town is filled with all manner of dead bodies in various states of “completely fucked up”… and those cut-up corpses seem to be pointing to the involvement of the occult! Seeing as most of the town and people in positions of authority are under the sinister sway of Reverend Donovan (Nick Baldasare)… who looks like a man of the cloth by day and the goddamned Night Stalker once the sun has set, it comes as little surprise. Danny Trejo. ‘Nough said right? He’s a living film legend with several credits to his name appearing on TV and in films ranging from horror to children’s movies. A rough exterior with a soft humble soul beneath. You would be surprised to know that he owns a chain of restaurants and donut shops in California! My Sister and Brother got to visit Trejo’s Donuts (Which they loved) but is there a way to bring the badass taste of the West Coast anywhere else? YES! I was lucky enough to be able to try out Trejo’s Hot Sauce that’s available online in the Trejo’s Tacos store! I want to give a big THANK YOU to Trejo’s Tacos for helping make this review possible! Horror films are a dime a dozen these days and leave us disappointed more often than not. But a new horror film, Bed Rest, hit me like a sledgehammer and left me feeling a gambit of emotions. Bed Rest, starring Scream actress Melissa Barrera, who plays the role of a young mother, still grieving the loss of her previous baby, finds herself pregnant and prescribed bed rest in her new home. It doesn’t take long to realize she and her husband are not alone in the house. With no one believing her, she sets out to find a way to save her baby and find out what message the spirits are trying to tell her. One of the biggest horror films of the year, Smile, will soon land on 4K Ultra, Blu-ray and DVD. Many have described it as the best horror film of the year, but is it? The film centers on a psychologist who, after witnessing the suicide of a patient claiming to be hunted by an entity that shows itself as a loved one and stranger with a big grin, realizes she’s its next victim. Doctor Rose Cotter, played by Sosie Bacon, sets out to discover the entity’s origins, track its victims to find a survivor, and learn how to escape her fate. If you are a fan of gore, you’re going to like this one. And let me tell you, the scene where the entity is finally revealed is killer! This thing is nasty! With the year nearly ending I was allowed the opportunity to play Children of Silentown nearly a month early thanks to Daedelic Entertainment and Elf Games. A spooky game that’s rated E for everyone?! How does that work? Let’s find out, this is Children of Silentown. Children of Silentown takes place in a small village located in the middle of a forest that’s home to monsters that can be heard at night. Due to the threat outside the village, strict rules based on superstitions were put into place but the foundation of the village is slowly being rocked by Lucy and her quest for answers about her nightmares and the disappearance of her mother which has the village on edge. Now onto the game itself! Children of Silentown‘s controls are pretty basic as it’s a point-and-click style game, with tutorials and reminders of what buttons do what.
