Abigail (Tinatin Dalakishvili) has grown up in a city surrounded by a thick border constructed to keep a mysterious illness at bay… an illness so severe that if you show any signs of having it the government just hauls your ass away (as they did with Abigail’s own father). The problem with this is, the disease doesn’t exist. In fact, Abigail’s city has been overtaken by dark magic users who have attempted to erase all knowledge of magic in a city once full of it, and dig this; the people hauled away are those suspected of being able to possess magic ability. The local school principal is eager to end the rumors that accidents that have befallen the student body as of late are the result of supernatural static comin’ straight from everybody’s fav monstrous mirror maiden; Bloody Mary! To that end he hires The Ghoulbusters (yes, they are called out on the name and their eerily similar logo); a squad of local ghost hunters (who fake all of their encounters ‘natch) hoping to score a shit-hot TV deal… and let’s not beat around the bush; these folks are pretty inept… some downright stupid in fact. Anyway, our faux-heroes totally release that dread dame from her looking-glass prison and soon she engages in a bloodbath the ‘busters’ are ill-equipped to handle! Will they survive the night and end Mary’s revoltin’ reign or will they end up the next pile of gory goo splattered all over the halls of that insane institution?!! While cruising around on YouTube to find some B-movies to watch for a future article, I stumbled, more like tripped over, a film I can’t believe I never heard of and after watching it I watched it again, The Silence of the Hams. The Silence of the Hams is a satirical film released in 1994 that spoofs The Silence of the Lambs and Psycho. The film is directed, written, and stars Italian comedian Ezio Greggio. The film features an impressive cast along with a list of cameos that includes John Carpenter, Mel Brooks, Joe Dante, John Landis, and Ray De Luca. The film follows FBI Agent Joe Dee Fostar (Billy Zane) who needs the help of Dr. Animal Cannibal Pizza (Dom DeLuise) to locate and stop a serial killer. From producers of Tuftland comes Sami Pöyry‘s new gritty psychedelic thriller, Red Static whose teaser trailer has arrived, giving us a taste of what’s to come. The film directed and written by Pöyry tells the story of Timo, a lonely man living on a secluded farm, who invites his childhood friends for a visit. He has a plan that will change their lives forever. The gritty and almost psychedelic film addresses the same issues as the Oscar winners Parasite and Joker; mental health issues and alienation from society. Red Static (also known as Punainen Kohina), filmed in the Finnish countryside under the sunlight of summer nights, stars the established faces of Finnish independent and genre cinema Jari Manninen, Roope Olenius, Veera W. Among the incredible films selected for the 22nd annual Boston Underground Film Festival are some mouth-watering horror movie options. The fest returns to Harvard Square, bringing with it five days of cutting-edge cinema to the Brattle Theatre from March 25th through the 29th. This year’s program boasts, according to BUFF’s press release, “a whole lot of unholy obsession, objectophilia, WTF thrillers, genre-spinning slashers, familial dysfunction, queer clairvoyance, and more!” Among the fear fare on display at BUFF will be U.K. writer-director Rose Glass’ gut-punch feature debut Saint Maud, a chilling and boldly original vision of faith, madness, and salvation in a fallen world. BUFF hosts the Boston premiere of this highly anticipated upcoming A24 release, with director Glass in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. The fest’s thematic strand of unholy obsession continues with the world premiere of the 2K restoration of Philip Ridley’s 1995 awe-inspiring The Passion of Darkly Noon, courtesy of the American Genre Film Archive and Arrow Films.

The Shadow Writer/director/star Bridget Barbara’s period piece horror The Shadow drips with dread and foreboding from the opening frame and never lets up. A young woman (Barbara) showing signs of physical distress walks through a forest around sunset, has a meal while looking troubled, and then is confronted by the titular presence in her bedroom. Barabara gives a splendid silent performance, investing her character with a sadness that feels palpable, and shows a keen eye for framing haunting shots. Artfully shot by director of photography Derek Haager, the short recalls gloomy, Old World-set tales of the supernatural, and the score and sound design are terrific accompaniments.
