I had the chance to interview actress Bianca Bradey. Bradey’s most recent film was the zombie film ‘Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead’. In the movie, Bradey plays the role of Brooke, a badass heroine that develops the power to control zombies after she receives a series of shots from a deranged scientist after being kidnapped. Bradey does a fantastic job in the movie. Her character comes across as tough, but sexy. You have to see ‘Wyrmwood’ for yourself to truly appreciate her performance. Bradey was kind enough to speak with me and answer a few of my questions.
KM “How did you get started in acting?”
BB “I always wanted to be an actor. I started acting, singing, and dancing when I was very young. But I never pursued it seriously. I was always so shy when I was little. I never really believed in myself enough I think. But one day I woke up and realized I wasn’t being true to myself, and I was wasting my life. We only get one chance at this; if we aren’t living every day honestly, then what is the point? So, I just thought “Fuck It”. And I went out there and did it. ”
KM “Can you tell us a little about your first role?”
BB “My first role ever..? Was in a school play. I grew up in quite an alternative house, and I went to a hippy primary school. I was in Kindergarten, only 5 years old, and I played one-third of a jellyfish. I was with my two best friends at the time, which was the best. We ran around waving a tie-dye cloth in the air. Very random answer I know… but there you go!”
KM “You play a badass woman with the ability to control zombies in ‘Wyrmwood’. How did you get into that mindset?”
BB “Wyrmwood was such a great opportunity, and Brooke was an absolute dream role. It was the chance to play the strong kick-ass role that I have always longed to. I saw her as a cross between Joan of Arc, and Lisbeth Salander from ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. She was solitary, stoic, brave, and took no bullshit. So I just channeled my inner tuff chick. I made her as strong as I could. But I think I’m so sensitive and in touch with my emotions in real life, it saved her from being 2-Dimensional. You need to have vulnerability, otherwise, no one was going to identify with her. She couldn’t be a robot. She was a real person. A reluctant hero instead.”
KM “You spent part of the movie chained to a wall, what was that like?”
BB “It was definitely a challenge, I’m not going to lie! But then a lot of this film was, which is what I loved about it. Being tied to a wall, with a mask covering half my face, for a significant chunk of the film, meant I had to find a way to convey every thought, feeling, reaction and emotion with just my eyes. And I really worried that I never emoted enough… But Kiah, the director, said right from the beginning that my ability to show that was one of the reasons he cast me in the first place. I’m one of those people that cannot lie in real life! You can see every thought pass behind my eyes. So hopefully that translated on film…”
KM “It most definitely did. Bradey has one of the most intense stares you’ll ever see.”
KM “What was your favorite part about filming Wyrmwood?”
BB “My Favorite part was working with the entire crew. They were absolutely amazing. And some of my favorite life memories are from that film set. And also, basically getting to live a complete fantasy. Where in real life do you get to play an ass-kicking superhero who controls an army of the undead?! Dream come true.”
KM “In the horror genre there are so few heroines, how does it feel to be one?”
BB “I feel so humbled and happy to be a part of Wyrmwood. I’m just so thankful that I did her justice, and that people are responding to her. I really want her to be a true heroine. Someone who didn’t need rescuing. She is resourceful and can save herself. She isn’t the typical “love interest” or “girlfriend”. She’s a Hero. And I’m so glad the fans are loving her!! We need more strong female role models for women in films. I’m so honored to get the opportunity to possibly be one of them.”
KM ” I’ve heard there was going to be a sequel (it’s already listed on IMDb), is that true?”
BB”Ahhhhhhh…Sequel….. No word on that front that I know of, unfortunately. Have to keep watching this space!”
KM “What are you working on next?”
BB “Next up I’m working on a brilliant web series I’m a part of here in Australia. It’s called “Starting From Now” and has so far aired 3 seasons and has a huge international fan base. We are about to shoot seasons 4 & 5, which should be awesome. I’m also about to be working on Shane Abbess’s new sci-fi currently shooting here. But honestly, I’m about to come to the US. Which I am really excited about. Would love to work on more international feature films. So lots of exciting things coming up.”
KM “When you’re not acting, what do you enjoy doing?”
BB ” I’m such an Aussie Beach girl at heart. My happiness is sitting in the sunshine, down at Bondi Beach, reading a book and hanging out with my beautiful friends and my dog. And I love to do anything creative as well. I like to make things, and baking, and wandering around the markets. I’m probably a little bit hippy at heart. And I love spending time with my family. I am a very proud new Anty. I don’t think there has ever been a more adorable baby than my niece Isobel.”
KM “What is your favorite Horror movie and why?”
BB” Honestly horror films scare the hell out of me. But I love anything that deals with the fragile future of the human race. I find it fascinating. My favorite horror film is “28 Days Later”. I love the idea of waking up and the whole world as you know it has changed. The cities are abandoned and human beings are pretty much extinct. I thought Danny Boyle, the director, did such a great job at portraying the isolated, desolated landscape that the main character woke up to. I loved it. It’s definitely the type of film I would love to be part of.”
I was impressed with Bianca Bradey after watching ‘Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead’, but now know more about her as a person, I’m left even more impressed and grateful that she took the time to speak with me. I see a bright future in entertainment for Bradey. I look forward to watching her career flourish.
